P-51 Control Issues - Flovenz - 08.01.2010

Confusedhock:

Dear All
First let me say, I really love this site and would like to thank you all who have made your mods available for download to the rest of us who really do not know anything about making a mod.

I have an issue with the stock P-51 which I am sure is there for a reason, I just dont get it ! The P-51 handling characteristics are quite strange in my humble view. If for an example to are cruising at 250 knots and bank 60

Engine Torque?? Put your combat flaps down and then make
your turn. Guessing here but I would say it is the engine torque.
You did not say Left or Right turn???

You are turning way too slow and pull up so you stall. When a plane stalls it doesn't do what you want. It is correctly modeled and I have no problem when flying mustang. You just have to get used to it and learn when plane stalls and when it does not.

Go into the game and then find the screen that shows your pitch / yaw / roll setup. Reduce your max pitch deflection to 78-80 and adjust all the other pitch settings in a linear angle to meet that value. Part of the problem is that you're unintentionally over-pitching the aircraft. Airspeed doesn't matter since an aircraft can stall at ANY airspeed.

That will help 80% of your problem. The other 20% is the massive gyro on the nose of that aircraft. Smoothness and rudder coordination are key to fighting a good 1 vs 1 dogfight with a similarly classed aircraft. If your in a turn and a wing starts to drop ...use opposite rudder to counter the drop, NOT AILERON.

Never fight the other guys' fight. In other words, learn the Mustangs qualities and shortcomings and know the same for the other guy.

The other thing to keep in mind....the guy that pulls the hardest first, loses. Wink

Hope this helps.

The P-51 was designed to be a high altitude escort fighter.

Its flight characteristics are optimal at high altitudes.

It is not designed for tree-top level dog fighting, which perhaps explains your difficulty.

Best,
Lefty

True but not true... From all accounts I havce heard.. personally and on paper... the Mustang was a pretty good fighter at any altitude... as long as you kept your speed up.
