Mini-Map for standard maps - J99Eingehirner - 11.01.2010
I have a short question:
Is it possible to change the mini map for a standard map (I'm interested in the nice and small Online4Summer map) so that it shows more detail at high zoom levels? I like to create small WW1-ish missions on this map (similar to J5_Klien's WW1 server) and WW1-ish navigation by rivers, buildings etc is rather difficult with the poor information given by the higher zoom levels on the standard mini maps. I would like something like a topographic map, with more detail in the height lines etc.
The most convenient way for me would be to drop a customized map in some kind of mods folder...

The maps in the FMB, the mini-maps, come as they are. They are usually named ed_M01.tga and ed_M02.tga and you should be able to extract them from the sfs files should you want, but aside from making your own new versions of these files with a graphics editor, there is no real way to get more detail out of them than they already have ...
Besides the maps you mention are some of the oldest around. Often they measure no more than 256 pixels by 256 pixels which is quite small compared to new maps being released by modders. With many of these you have FMB maps with sizes like 2656 x 1984 pixels.
So no way can you get more out those older maps. Not unless you make new FMB maps yourself. But on a 256x256 pixel map, there simply isn't much that you can put to begin with, the mapsize is too small to add much detail. All that you could mainly do is change the general appearance, which to be honest, might be a good idea, but a lot of work for little return.

OK, thank you very much for the quick reply... looks like I have to use the old ones then. Doesn't make manual navigation easier...
