Jet exhaust flames - aviatorsneah - 29.01.2010
Using the Uranium Effects mod with the UP2.0. Is there a way to get rid of the jet exhaust flames when above about 80% power? From what I know of 50s-era and later jets, this didn't happen. A flame never shot out the back in the grandeur that it does in IL-2. I could understand that maybe the Me262 and real early jet engines might've had a flame or two flicker out of the back every now and then when putting a lot of fuel into it, but to me it's just unrealistic on an F-86 or Panther or any other KTO jet (non-reheat or afterburn) to have a 6 foot flame coming out the back. What's the file that handles this? Did a search and couldn't find anything on this here, so hopefully this isn't a double post on the subject.

I've noticed that too and I think it is in the FM file so the creators would have to make the changes. I could be wrong though.

Yeah I suppose that part is hardcoded somewhere...but I'm sure there is an effect file somewhere for the actual flame. Hopefully it's not linked to other flame effects though.

The only time one should see flames out the back of a jet engine is with an afterburner. The early jet engines tended to have minimal flame during start and at the most light blue and orange flame at very high power settings but not nearly as intense as what is in the game. It should be nearly impossible to see from any distance in the air unless you're flying right up the tail pipe. From a mechanical standpoint it is not good to have flame touching the turbine blades, or any other interior parts of the engine.

Uranium effects mod didn't changed or altered in any way jets engine flame effect .
Same thing like with a lot of other effects applies here , if you remove/reduce flame effect , it will be removed
or reduced for all game default original jet planes .
We never looked in to which effects files are using new added planes like F-86 or Panther or any other KTO jet .
Can't tell if they got separated effect class files entries for engine flame at full power but likely they did.
No time to go through this .
We never bothered to reduce jet engine flame for default original game jets because it's a 95% WWII propeller aircraft
simulator and at least we separated jet engine at full power smoke from propeller aircraft damage smoke but that's about it .
We do not fly jets that much in our effects team so we have never paid attention to jet flame .
Can it be reduced or removed ? yes , applying for most of the original game default jets at once .
F-86 or Panther or any other KTO jet flame would have to be looked at on each by each basis how flame effect was assigned .

Re-heat n' afterburner are two words for the same thing ;-)

Planes of this era had "can" combustors, so there really was no open flame at all. The combustion gas was diluted with bypass air as it emerged from the "can" to drop the temperature substantially (turbine blades would melt at full flame temperature). So, no flames should seen out of the back under normal conditions, and for that matter, I doubt you could see flame even if you looked directly up the tailpipe.
