S.M 79 Sparviero Question - Loht773 - 19.02.2010

Hey Lads! I wanted to know, How is one able to use the gunner in the back of the plane? Because when you do you cannot see the tail or anything just the insides of the machine. Is there any way to aim while using the back gunner?

The gun is covered by default. When enemy is near, it uncovers. There is also a command, but I forget which.

I think I understand your problem. Start flying in the pilot's seat right? When you play the pilot, open the cockpit! That is the key to use the dorsal and ventral guns. That's all folks! [Image: hat.gif]

I love this plane and its cool cockpit function.

I've never liked this plane, and I've never given a notice, untill I flew it in IL2. Than I changed my mind. It flies beautifully, surprisingly maneuverable, very tight turning abilities and absoulutelly low stalling speed. I'm impressed! The gunner position gave me a headache until I tried to open the side window in the cockpit. I surprised that the cockpit open message appeared, but I didn't see any change in the pilots seat. Than I went to the gunner position and it was already opened, although there were no enemy fighter activity in that area (autopilot opens dorsal and ventral gunner shields when enemy fighters appears). Than I had the solution. I was also surprised that no flap control. I thought it has no flaps at all. Than turned out, it has automatic flaps and leading edge slots. Very impressive!

Well Ive always wanted the Sparviero for IL-2 since I read an article on the Aviation History magazine about Dalmazio Corradini an S.M 79 pilot who flyed in torpedoing missions from Africa against the British Fleet. He was shoten down in flames by Spitfires over the Mediterranean Sea and was rescued by an English War Ship. The he became a POW and met his cousin who was on the US Army as a Sargent which is pretty odd. Ive trying to fly torpedo missions with the S.M 79 but no matter how far away or how close to the water I am (I even released my torpedo when being 10m from the water) my torpedo ALWAYS explodes when it hits the water. Does anyone know how to perfome a succesfull torpedoing mission? Cause Im getting tired of seeing my torpedos blow up below me without even hitting the bloody ships haha.

Heres a drawing of Corradinis S.M 79:

Very funny, but when carry torpedo, it has some very ancient like sight in the cockpit. Of course, it works well actually. I like the bead and ring gunsight for the fixed forward firing 12,7mm Breda mg, I can fly some dogfight against for example I-15s. Really great fun to use this aircraft in a dogfight. Of course, you have to choose some under-armed and slow fighter (biplane, usually) to fight against them.
