gun barrel model - GenSwat - 20.02.2010

how do i fix the mappin on end of barrel and do u think i should round barrel more ignore internal barrel texture I forgot to ingnore back spacing

[Image: gunbarrel2.jpg] 88 polys as of now

What are you modelling? Presume it is intended to be low poly model.
What software are you using?

Best number of sides to the barrel depends on size of gun.

15" guns on my Warspite model are done with 6 sided cylinder.
End can be capped with a simple square plate (2 triangles)
This square is made to appear like a circle by using alpha cut texture.
The total barrel model is 14 polys.

None of the existing guns in the game models have internal barrel modelled.
The internal barrel is just painted on the texture skin for the end of the barrel.

I am not a very experienced modeller but I have learnt a lot by extracting meshes from existing models in the game and working out how they are constructed. In my opinion there is no better guide than to follow the methods used in existing models which you admire.

thanks for tips - GenSwat - 20.02.2010

3d studio max 2009 its a pipe I was going to use a cylinder and thought maybe a bore then my polys jumped after that

thanks I still cant figure out how to extract the objects from the game and import them

barrel for 90mm

This is the msh extractor utility

I would not worry about applying textures yet.
The first challenge is to create an untextured 3d model.

For a 90mm barrel maybe reduce to a 5 sided cylinder.
Using the cylinder primitive in max this will be automatically "smoothed" correctly.
Depends how close it will normally be seen in the game

Convert to "Mesh" and delete the cap from the end which will not be seen.
Select the vertices at one end and using the scaling tool to create the barrel taper, if it has one.

The start point for any accurate model is to obtain some good blueprints and crop these to just show the parts you are interested in.
Then you need to set them up in max.
