AI attacking - csteimel47591 - 09.03.2010
Hey all,
I do a create a lot of missions and am having a problem with friendly AI.
I have a series of waypoints which lead to the target area. I'm the lead aircraft of only 1 squad. I want to go through, drop the bombs on the target area, and then proceed to the next waypoint. For some reason the planes in my squad stay fixated on the target area and keep doing passes to strafe everylast damn target.... Why? I've tried every targeting method there is (attack ground, attack target.etc) and they still fixate on the target area.
Sometimes I can get them to proceed by using the "proceed to next waypoint" message, but even that only works 40% of the time... Can anyone help?
Also, is it possible to hit two target areas? one target area would be with the bombs and then the second would be hit with our rockets... Is IL-2 capable of executing this?
Thanks,
CS

i think generally the AI will drop bombs first, then use rockets, then if targets are still available, machine gun and cannon. but i don't think you can split them up target to target. that's a good idea tho!
You can try the "Rejoin" command...that will usually stop them from attacking and getback into formation with you.
Also, when you are creating the mission in FMB, you can set up a Destroy-ground target and set the destruction level of the target to a lesser amount, like 25% or 50%.
This way, if there are a group of targets on the ground, the AI will only destroy that many of them, realize they have fulfilled the requirement, and move on.
Go to
www.il2-fullmissionbuilder.com and read some of the tutorials. they might have better info on your questions there as there are a lot of useful tips and tricks to using the FMB.

hmm... I know that problem.
have you tried inserting a second (dummy) target after the intended one on the way home?
I think I read somewhere that the Jabos/stukas will after one attack pass on to the next waypoint then. but I may be wrong there, someone else may know more.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but is there a thread or discussion that explains what the AI actually do and don't do in the game? Like CS I'm trying to create missions and am wondering how to get the AI to participate as i'd like.
I seem to be able to command the other three pilots in my flight if I am leader, though as CS said they sometimes don't react as you'd like. Also, if you are the lead in flight one of a squadron of 8 to 16 (or 2-4 flights), can you issue commands to the other flights of 4 and they will do what you tell them to some degree?
Thanks for the discussion CS.

From testing it appears each flight leader of 4 aircraft can command the ai aircraft in his flight. But they only attack what you tell them to attack if you/they are within 1300m or 5000ft, horizontally or vertically of what you are ordering them to attack. Seems that even SBDs follow this rule, though they should attack from 10-15k ft.
