[WIP] GW Summer Norway - GilB57 - 11.03.2010

After having re-textured Winter Norway (within GW Winter mapspack : I've done summer map using Mixx great nordic texs and the map_T I made for my winter map. I also added an ed_map_T to allow navigation in larger fjords.

The only texs I reworked is for Banff airbase and one fields tex.:

GW NORWAY SUMMER V2 INSTALLATION.

Nomore mod needed BEFORE installation, necessary Mixx textures are included into this package (but not ALL of them)

1-Unzip into your game folder
2-Add in your maps list (all.ini) :
Norway_Summer_GW Norway/GS_load.ini

If you use UP 2.0, MODS must be activated : delete "-" before it.
If you already have Mixx Zapolar map installed, the unzip process may ask you to erase some files, answer "yes" because files were not altered.

New in this V2 release :
-A few cultivated fields are now visible in Scotland and south Norway
-All required textures are included
-I also provided a modified GW_load.ini to allow ships to navigate in fjords in the GW winter Norway map.

AKNOWLEDGEMENTS & CREDITS : Mixx for his great nordic textures & also Compans one.

Scenery around Banff airfield is pretty much unchanged from WWII.
Here is a Google Earth image. More of a rural field pattern than rocky moorland.
Love the look of the Norway scenery though.

Well, thx for the information :wink:

But, as this map was not intended, from the beginning, to be historical, I simply re-used existing files from Mixx & my previous map_T file.
I should have reworked the map_T file to add fields pattern at this place, no ?

Thank you for the retextured map GilB,

I have one question - is the path to mixx textures in your GS_load file correct?
When I tried to load the map it didn't worked and I had to change the paths so that they look like that:

[FIELDS]
LowLand0 = land/ZaPolar/Mixx_Terra10.tga,2
LowLand1 = land/ZaPolar/Mixx_TOP2.tga
LowLand2 = land/ZaPolar/Mixx_BOLOTO.tga
LowLand3 = land/ZaPolar/Mixx_Motovski_Coast.tga
MidLand0 = land/ZaPolar/MIXX_Norge_Gorie2.tga
........
......
....

For me, it is ...
But there MAY be different install ... the one I have is conform to new AAA texture placement rules, I suppose.

In that case, you may change it to be consistent with your install, sorry :-?

- kapteeni - 11.03.2010

I'm sorry, but i must move this to WIP section. MixxConfused Arctic map (which is needed)is beautifull, but it does not follow the AAA filestructure. It can change some static. object's textures with some unwanted results. Sorry guys.
If you install Mixx map, there is some edited object's and all users can't install manually. I will check Gilbs map when i have time and if everything is OK, i will put this back as "official mod".
I have downloaded this map and it IS better than Stock map and installing manually the MixxConfused textures don't affect to any other objects.

GilB57, I have another question. Do you plan to update your Norway winter map? I noticed some small problems. For example there are trees in the water east of Herdla airfield and in FMB it is not possible to place ships in some areas along the Norwegian coast in the south part of the map. It looks like FMB doesn't recognize these areas as ocean. I haven't noticed these problems with you Norway summer map.

- GilB57 - 11.03.2010

@Kapteeni :
you're right :
This is exactly what I did : I deleted Mixx's duplicate objects & kept the map texs. Even if my Mixx arctic map install is not exactly what he intended to, it keeps to be a real great map to me.
If you want my map to work and nothing more, just put only Mixx's Texs in folder Mapmods/maps/_tex/ZaPolar/.. and you're done.

@Juri :
You're right too :

just add this in the GW_load.ini :

[TMAPED]
ed_map_T.tga

because I made this file for my summer map and it may work also for the winter one . After that, ships may navigate also in fjords (but not the smaller ones :wink: ).
Strangely, I didn't found any reference to this file in any Norway load.ini...so I made it !

About the trees : I may look at that some day :oops:

I don't think that Mixx gets pissed, if you just copy he's _Tex folder and add it to your mapfolder, so ppl don't need to install that Arctic map. Just for textures. You could ask for he's agreement, though.

Thx !

I've been doing some flying around in this map and consider it to be an incredibly well done repaint, very atmospheric and with one of the best realism factors I've seen. Especially the way that vertical cliffs use rock textures, but not above nor below ... don't know how that could have been done without placing the cliff textures by hand, but it looks first class.

Just goes to show that many of the old standard maps have a lot going for them. Sometimes all they need is a bit of refurbishing ...

Great repaint/retexturing. Hope you find the time and urge to do some more maps.

- GilB57 - 14.03.2010

Thx Agracier... Big Grin

I finally thought that I've been a little too fast to release this one : so I just tried to modify it according to Asheshouse, and I added a few cultivated fields in Scotland and south Norway mainly near villages & towns (and around Banff airfield :wink: ) :

[Image: 307441norway_summer01.jpg]

[Image: 790935norway_summer02.jpg]

I'll release it again as soon as I get an answer coming from Mixx... (so that I may add his texs inside my pack)

Quote:Especially the way that vertical cliffs use rock textures, but not above nor below ... don't know how that could have been done without placing the cliff textures by hand, but it looks first class.

It was quite easy for me as the main work comes from the winter GW Norway map I made some months ago (It is the same map_T file) . The work I did on this one was one of the more elaborated I ever done : not only the steep slopes were extracted to carry their own tex but I also separated south oriented vertical cliff from north oriented vertical cliff.

In order to find the steep slope, I didn't did it by hand but used my 3D software (Lightwave) that way :
1- I created a simple plane on which I applied a displacement map using Norway map_H.tga as elevation map and a flat light color.
2- I put 1 single directional light but EXACTLY vertical above this plane and I rendered a top view : the slopes appear a bit darker than horizontal surfaces.
3- I used Photoshop light-contrast tool to have it more visible
4- I had to put this "slope-map" at the exact corresponding position on my work map_T picture file (on another layer)... and tput here a rocky tex.

...hope this can help !
