Couple of wierd problems, please have a look - sc1949 - 15.03.2010

Need some help here, as listed below, would appreciate some feedback.

Had some videocard probs, which was sent back and fixed. Seems good now.

Went to play iL2, and all seemed well in a mission, then it just dropped out to desktop. Tested on same mission over a few hours and it drops out at nearly the same spot each time, about 3 or 4 minutes into the missions. This happens on a virgin install of 1946 as well. Mission is first Finland single mission (First day of the Continuation War). Others drop out too, usually in middle of combat. You get no warning, just straight to desktop. Vid temps are OK, computer not o/c, and has 6Gb memory with core i7 cpu.

Have found problems with Vista and games in the past, like it won't load games that were previously installed, so I load them on my old XP pro computer, then just copy across, and they run OK. Rome Total War in last case, previously took back Empire Total War, because it wouldn't install over steam, even though I had disc set in box, I should have tried on the XP computer, but at least in Australia we can get a refund if it isn't up to scratch. Only found out that it could have been Vista because of R:TW not installing (CUA off). Other late games play OK, (Stalker, CoD4, DCS:Blackshark,Farcry2, Fallout3), and iL2 used to play perfect before, just now this prob.

Partly fixed this with the Catalyst AI turned off, but it is still dropping out, though a lot longer, sometimes you can finish a mission, sometimes not.

Also getting error in some missions about "3do/humans/paratroopers/russia/mono.sim" when mission is loading. Found some files that I placed, which helped for a while, then it started again, quit game, restarted same mission and it was OK again, what causes this?

Any help would be appreciated, I want to go flying again.

This is an error log generated in \il2 1946 directory, and under that is my conf.ini file.

Hi,

This could be RAM reaching capacity. Also, driver gliche. A different graphics driver might solve this. Go to my PC Tech Help Forum Topic called " PC Technical Relationship to IL-2: This info helps everyone " for more details.

I'm no expert, but this seems to point to GPU or graphics driver issue. As Fireskull suggested, maybe try rolling back to older drivers.

Also looks like you are using Device Link?

Good day,

On second look, it appears to be implied that you might have IL-2 in Program Files. If this is so, then drag it out Program Files. I have my main IL-2 versions that I use as major files on my user disk. It's not even in the Users folder. I made IL-2 to be a major folder alongside other ones such as Users, Windows, Apps Data, and so forth. The loading and transitions are quicker this way. I have Vista. This Operating System does not like IL-2 in Program Files.

Another major issue is to test every download, folder, and file for corruption. Fortunately, this can usually be done by folder. For example, each time you download a mod pack, it should be scanned for malware-first and tested for corrupt files-second: Before you open it!

Both the Program Files and corrupt files are possibities. Once you get something clean, make a copy of it for safekeeping.

I sure wish you well with this.

Thanks Fireskull & 8FS_Bulau,
have just got back to this, and will try as you suggest. I have iL2 in c:\Games\...etc not programs, as I saw the problems cropping up when researching for Vista x64, also know about CUA etc. The memory one has me stumped as I have 6Gb and Vista x64 is supposed to use all of it. I'm personally thinking graphics, as I had a lot of trouble when I was installing the Blackshark heli sim, and it refused to work until I eventually went to Cat 9.6 drivers, then it was, and still is, fine. But even after that, and before my videocard went crook, iL2 played alright, now it won't go for more than about 5 or 6 minutes.

I'll keep trying to get it right, and will look at that link you mentioned.

Thanks for your help.

I know that this is getting to be a lot of things to consider, but please bear with me.

The 6 GB of RAM is fairly large, but even this can get full. You really need to study my help topic in the PC Tech Help Forum. I do not intend to SPAM it everywhere but this is likely a PC Tech management issue, though there could be one or two IL-2 Tech issues besides this.

PC Tech Help Forum-Sticky: " PC Technical Relationship to IL-2: This info helps everyone " topic.

I read about a guy one time who got drastic and downloaded an entire second Operating System besides his original one. He was using two operating systems in his computer. The second one was for only IL-2 and that OS was installed in a new disk partition apart from the other one. All his problems disappeared! You might be able to make an authorized copy of your OS into a new partition designated by you and install IL-2 there, out Program Files. Keep in mind that this is basically a last resort. Another less drastic possibility is to install IL-2 into an external hard drive. Some guys have done this and IL-2 runs just fine.

Also, a driver that is good for other games might not be good for IL-2. I have not figured how to resolve this easily.

Please for the benefit of the readers, let us know when you fix this how you did it, okay?

Will do that, if and when I fix it.

Fireskull

Here's an update, hope it will help others who have troubles.

Catalyst 10.2 was installed, but my problems with iL2 continued. Also had graphics tearing in Imperial Glory, and some (not as bad) in Praetorians, 2 games I bought last week for $10, that worked perfect with 9.6 Cat drivers.

Saw that a fix sometimes worked, that being to take a copy of the Catalyst 9.1 atioglxx.dl_ and put it in root of C:\ drive, then use CMD>enter, then type "expand C:\atioglxx.dl_ C:\atioglxx.dll This file is then copied into iL2's root directory, and voila, all is fixed.

I had tried something someone had posted, that was to just rename atioglxx.dl_ to atioglxx.dll and this always caused an error from Vista.

Also tried copying the atioglxx.dll file to Imperial Glory and Praetorians, and resulted in the graphics anomalies in those being fixed, so this method will most likely work on any other problem games.

One program that it didn't fix was Mafia, which has always refused to start on Vista, only getting to the part where you need to put the right cd in the drive, did that but it tries, but just see a black flash, then back to desktop. Have installed on XP pro from same disk set, runs perfectly.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

This is very good news, indeed. I am very happy that you fixed the issue with IL-2. The ATI drivers have unique problems in IL-2, and some other games, too, as you discovered. Naturally, I did not want to put all this on front street for the sake of ATI, but you did it anyway. This is okay.

Readers can find the link for the ATI driver issue in my Sticky tech help topic at the top of this Forum. Look in the Table of Contents of my topic, found in the first post. Glance down to the ATI Enhancements subtopic. In that subtopic is my ATI Trouble-Shooting subject. Of course, I recommend reading the whole tech topic because it is loaded with useful information.

Have fun with the whole journey through things, everyone. Big Grin
