P47 engine fail on take off - spitfire13 - 20.03.2010

srory if this is in the wrong section but i was watching a video on the P47 and noticed that when the P47 lost its engine on take off the pilot would spin it on the ground to stop it i have tryed many time and when i do my gear will snap... has any one else here ever done this with no damage to the plane like in this video

That's called a ground-loop, and it's a good maneuver for bleeding off excess energy in a hurry, as far as I know this would only be attempted when the speed is low enough to do it safely and you've got sufficient runway left to do it.

As for doing it in IL-2, it's nearly impossible because we don't have differential braking, nor do the aircraft seem to have the same contact with the ground they should have, they all seem to be running on slick tyres on an extremely wet surface... :lol:

I've done it, and it can be done at 60mph maybe a little more but as you near 100mph its too fast.

Its easy to do in the direction the torque takes the plane. If you attempt to ground loop you should also cut the engine and apply break and the tail will swing around.

In RL, as well as in game, the actual technique involves S turning a few times to bleed down speed and then at the end of the runway let it swing around with the breaks pressed.

Works like a charm

I know from past experience that the spitfire, specifically the Vc(4) will happily swing around at speeds up to 90 km/h with the risk of a wing strike higher as the speed approaches 90 km/h...

Yes, I have done it many times, and the best one that works out for me is the tempest, and quite an amazing story happened with it Tongue. When I was still in EoW,

me and Gini were doing a couple flights, and we were both taxiing, and we both decided to rev up and ground loop it, well, we happened to do it at the same time

and almost had a perfect synchronized ground loop in formation, it was quite epic. Although, didn't get it on track Sad
