Its more of a movie program but it can be used to make games, but I think it can only save a project as a .blend file.

Gmax is also a good program.

Save only as a .blend file is correct, but you can import/export blender files to a wide arrange of known supported 3D formats. Including 3ds (3D studio max).
That Blender3D is only a movie program however is not completely correct. It is used mostly to make 3D rendered movies, but it does not stop there, since it's a fully supported 3D package for game rendering, stills rendering, 3D movies, modelling and sculpting.

I'm using Blender3D for a while now and it's a whole new world for someone like me who works with 3Dmax since version 5.
I would personally use 3Dmax over Blender to make content for IL2, but that is a personal choice.

For anyone interested, here a few links for use with Blender3D

I have been trying to learn Blender for ages, but the UI sucks bigtime. Too many things for beginners. I just wish that they would announce more simplier version for beginners. It is by far the best freeware 3d program, but the learning curve is steep....
There are many good freeware programs too.
The best for IL2 is 3d max.

Hello All,

I've tried Blender 2 years ago, i didn't find the interface very friendly, to 3d modeling i personally prefer or Gmax or Zbrush, depending of what i need to execute.

But still is worth a try, i don't really know the new versions of blender.

I'm on Blender 2.49, it was a bit of a hassle to install (I got the wrong Python version), and the learning curve is pretty steep.
But then again, that goes for the learning curve on alot of 3D programs.

Getting to learn 3DsMax was'nt really that easy aswell, but it's user interface is a little more friendly.
As said, Blender3D is a world of difference with commercially sold programs like Maya and 3DsMax, but if you take the time to learn, you will find the Blender3D interface quite intuitive. Smile

I don't know what the latest Blender3D 2.5 Alpha version holds, but I feel really tempted to try it anytime soon. 8)

hello all.
I'm using Dr.Jones converter to open default meshs in it. TYhen I save them as *.3ds format.
But when I try to open those saved 3ds files in 3DS MAX, it says "improper file format"...
What do I do wrong?
What version of 3d max is supported by Jones' convertor? Since I'm using "autodesk 3d max 2010"?
why it can't work?
