Request for P-38K and XP-49 'What if Lightnings' - Cuccos19 - 27.03.2010

I would make a request for the P-38K and the XP-49 'What if Lightnings'. I know that they are virtally what if aircrafts, but they flown at least, and not completly fictional ones. We already have a lot of prototypes or never combat ready aircrafts - by Oleg's team as well - so why wouldn't we have these ones. They are very top class, hard hitting fighters, not just sport planes, like the Tigermoth or RWD-8 for example.

If the bureaucrats would give a permission for the retooling of the Lockheed's product line, the P-38K would be the next - and maybe the final - fighter variant of the Lightning. And it would save a lot of american pilots life as well.

I believe that even though the P-38 was a superior plane it was 8 balled for economic reasons. It was almost twice as expensive as a P51 or P47. If you take into consideration the cost of training a combat pilot I would argue that is was more than economical.

Bong, McGuire and most P-38 pilots came home on one engine very early in their careers. They would have been dead long before they actually did die and did lots of damage to the enemy in the mean time.

I would like to second the motion.

P-38s never flown in Korea. They were all scrapped or sold out for that time. As others told, it was a too expensive aircraft. Pilots life 'didn't worth of it'... No comment...

I hate them, whose let that to do. That's really sad for me, and other Lightning's lover. Wish those aircraft ended up somewhere in the third world, they maybe would still exsit now.

Thanks, great infos! I really like the Bat, although I forget it almost... :-? I'm concentrating so much on the P-38K... :lol: But if we talking about the what ifs, we should mention the Vultee XP-54 Swoose Goose, the Curtiss XP-55 Ascender and the Northrop XP-56 Black Bullet. And who knows how many aircrafts! :???:

Do anyone working currently on the Westland Whirlwind (WWII fighter of course, not the 50's helicopter)

If you go to SAS IL-2 1946 forum, there is alot of progress going on on the development of navy version of P-38s done by famous modders there for IL-2 1946. I also posted great information on two different types of Navy version of P-38 projects with different engnies, in case you want to gather information on these P-38s projects from there.
