I have had it.... "No Joy with Win7" - Barrister - 30.03.2010

I was forced to wipe my hard drive a month ago and just got around this weekend to reloading IL-2 Luft' 46 using Win 7 Home Edition from the game disk. I updated my RAM from 1 to 4 and even bought a new 3d Logitek Flight Stick looking forward to getting back in the cockpit. After a difficult time getting the game to load on Win7 - I tried to run and my frame rate was so slow I finally gave up. I have a Dell desktop about 5 years old with an Intel 33 processor. Am I wasteing my time trying to get up and running or am I better waiting for SOW to be released and buying a new system to handle it? I am guessing my processor is too slow to run both Win7 and IL-2? :???:
p.s. IL 2 ran great, with good detail, on the same system while running Win XP.

I'm surprised win7 even runs on that system. I'd suggest getting the new rig...or put XP back on this one and run IL2.

What kind of video card you have ?

and aviatorsneah is absolutely correct about getting your WINDOWS XP back !! I'm pretty sure that you cant run windows 7 on old PC's

Intel 33? wow that is extremely old. Put win2000 instead.

All the money upgrading could be spent saving up for a new computer.
I'd say go back to windows XP is great OS and I'd stick with it if the new cpu I got
didnt come with Vista already on it.

Good luck tring to fix the problem though, haha.

I am assuming the 33 means 3.3ghz, i hope I'm right. I just had a 5 year old system kill itself and it was equipped with a 2.8ghz AMD chip so it would seem reasonable. With 4 GB of RAM I am very surprised that you are having bad performance issues with IL2 in Win7. How much space do you have left in the HD? What type of graphics card are you running? The only time that IL2 has done what you are describing to me is when my BIOS stopped reading my 512MB 8600GT and would only run through the on board (4MB) setup.

I have Win7 on my new laptop and besides IL2 not running in wide screen I have had no problems even with a mod install. But, it takes 30GB from the HD for its own private fun house and consistently uses 1.3GHZ of RAM when idle. It eats resources like crazy, but i do feel its better then Vista, IMHO. I really like the separate Program Files (x86) for running 32-bit programs, seems to make it more Sakai friendly then Vista.

These are the specs for my laptop and u can compare to ur rig to see if u need more power;

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Pentium® Dual-Core CPU T4400 @2.20GHz
3 GB RAM
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (graphics)

This setup runs IL2 '46 modded online, so it should be a good base to compare too, and its not high end at all!

I really appreciate all the help you guys are offering - there may still be hope!

Here are the specs for my system (according to Win7 control panel):

Win7 - Home Premium

Intel Premium(4) CPU 3.2Ghz 3.19Ghz
RAM 4.0 GB (3.25 GB usable)
32 bit Operating System
Radeon X 800 GT (graphics card)

Does this help?

Wow that doesn't make any sense, you should be able to run IL2 and Win7 with no problem. I'm pretty sure Win7 is native 64-bit system so you running on 32 is disconcerting. I would say check the BIOS and make sure that you are loading your graphics card and not the integrated chip set. Otherwise I don't know.

Barrister,

I also just updated to Win7 (x64 Ultimate). Like you I was having issues. Turned out to be a driver problem, (Motherboard).
Ensure you're running the correct drivers for everything. By default, Win7 will try to use your old Vista drivers as they are VERY similar.
Unfortunately, sometimes there may be issues. Go to your Motherboard and Video card web sites and ensure you download and install the correct Windows 7 drivers for your system. DO NOT let the Nvidia website use the auto scan. If you used it before and go into it again with Win7 after having Vista, Nvidia still thinks your system is running Vista and will not download the correct version.

Hope this helps you out.

i had a similar problem when i first installed Win 7 RC. updating the display drivers did the trick, it went from single-figure FPS to in the 60-70 range instantly.

- Barrister - 31.03.2010

That makes sense - I will give it a try and let you know how it works - all advice is much appreciated. :-?

- Barrister - 02.04.2010

It took me a couple of days to get back to my desk top and found when I loaded IL2 - it never requested I check the settings.... it was as simple as enabling Direct X rather than Open GL graphics and it ran as fast as I could ever have dreamed - with the new 4mgs of RAM and the new Logitech flight stick I am at peace with the world and tearing up the sky! Big Grin Thank you all for your assistance ahd suggestions - I would probably have given up otherwise! :o

- Thrud - 03.04.2010

il-2 prefers Open GL to DX.
If i recall, you can't use perfect mode with directX

- Barrister - 03.04.2010

Don't know what I can say :???: except it is working now on the highest level of graphic detail with "Direct X" when it only barely stuttered with "Open GL" . I will keep flying and see if it fails on this setting. :-?
