Skinning help - slimbill - 31.03.2010
Hey im starting with skinning in il2. I saw vagabond' s tutorials and all. But im having a problem with most of the void skins, they seem to have no outline, so the colour just flows out. Any help?

You have to select the area you are going to paint. Do you use GIMP?

You'd probably be better off starting on a real layered template, so you get the hang of how templates are built up and how all the different layers are placed and what they contain.
If you start on a void skin, you'll end up building a template from scratch, creating layer upon layer. This will be much more work and a bit difficult for a beginner.
Once you know how to use ready-made layered templates, you can start making your own templates from a void skin, but I'd say if there are templates available, why go to all the trouble of making new ones? You can always add your own layers to an existing template, change markings or add other details.
You can find a whole collection of ready made templates at Mission4Today, at Simmerspaintshop and several here on AAA as well.

Ah, there's your problem. You're not using new layers. I can see from your layers list you only have the base layer. I would suggest going to
http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/
and take a look at their tutorial section for Photoshop. They have some good ones that help explain how to do all this.
I know it took me over a year before I attempted to make my first template from a void.
I would recommend getting the "Remove White" filter from simmerpaintshop also. Huge help in getting started.
Don't forget those tutorials.
Happy skinning.

Kudos to you.
But all the same, if you were to simply download a few layered templates and TAKE A LOOK at how they are structured, layered and built up, what each individual layer contains, which ones go on top of which others and so on, it would probably help you in understanding how to make your own template.
Most of the basic work on a layered template can be quite boring and repetitive, like making rivets and metal plate lines and screws and what not, and then giving them a 3D appearance. I'd say learn how to do that after you've become proficient in things like changing unit/national markings, camouflage patterns, profile colors and so on. You'll also see results quickly and this will encourage you to try more difficult things afterwards.
It's much easier to practice on an existing template first ...

Don't forget to show some of the resulting skins ... there are never enough skins ...
