A6M2 as British Capture - agracier - 03.04.2010

Here's a skin for a British captured Zero. The green coloring is an approximation as it's taken from a b/w photo, but it should be more or less in the general range.

Isn't it hard to take the colors from a B/W pic?

Of course ... if it weren't that I knew that many A6M's were colored dark green, then it would have a total stab in the dark ... I made a dark red version for myself as well and that looked quite nice too.

I suppose that somewhere there is software or charts that can give reasonably good suggestions as to colors, but it's still an approximation I'd think. You'd otherwise have to compensate for over exposure either during the photography in the camera, in the darkroom printing or even in the scanning process. 3 areas to have large margins for mistakes. Multiply that by 3 and I guess you can argue for virtually every color ...

There are also official color charts for approved colors per air force and per period and all, but every day use, dirt, bleaching of colors by sun, rain and sand can all effect colors.

That's also why many skinners here often distrust color profiles made by modern artists. The color tones vary quite widely often enough ...

Luckily this is only a game with many components made by amateurs ... so we make allowances ... at least I do ...

It's very difficult to approach real colors from a BW photos, but it's true that color charts of air forces
may be very useful!

However, even your good profile, Cuccos, is mistaken (in my opinion) because if we look closely
to the photo we can see that the spinner is not black like the engine cowl but is probably red or blue
and the rudder is of a green darker then the rest, probably a spare part taken from an other aircraft.

Right you are. Here's an adapted skin incorporating those features ... the tail is darker, but the red spinner gives a nice touch.

I've never flown much in an A6M before and with this British capture skin I used it in a few dogfights. Never realized what a highly maneuverable and agile plane the A6M was ...

True, but if you are hit...it's a plane that really can't take it!

thx for quick update!!!
