If you start out by downloading a few templates for skin making and seeing how they are put together and how they work, you should be able to figure it rather easily. The key to making skins is understanding how layers work and how to change them according to your needs and wishes.
The easiest changes to make are to overall aircraft colors, camo patterns and national/unit markings. Once you get those steps mastered, it's easy to go further. But practice a bit first in your graphics editor with a few templates.
You can download dozens of free and complete templates for skinning from sites such as Mission4Today, Simmerspaintshop and even a few here in the Skins section. Some templates are very intricate, having more than 100 layers, others only a dozen layers or so. Obviously it's best to start with some of the simpler templates.
