[WIP] Map - Australia: Queensland-New Guinea - agracier - 09.04.2010
Here's a link to a new map in progress of the area around the Torres Straights, with northern Queensland and southern New Guinea. The area between the 2 landmases has been reduced by about 25%, to reduce map size and flying time above water.

This is mainly a map for hypothetical scenarios since I don't think much happened in the way of military engagements of any size in this area. Still, it was fun to make and has a good feel to it. I didn't put in any 3D trees which come with forest textures. I hope that the other textures are a vivid enough approximation of the heavily forested terrain of New Guinea.
I also tried out some shallow water making and the placing of underwater reefs - this is still in a beginners way, but the results aren't too bad. Maybe in a later version I'll try and do some more work on this aspect. On maps with large water areas it can be a nice touch.
I also changed the water color to what i hope is something more like a Pacific water color. If it's not to your liking or if my monitor should perhaps give a less than decent color rendering, just strike out the lines:
WaterColorATI = 0.000 0.080 0.175 //Only used for ATI
WaterColorNV = 0.000 0.080 0.175 //Only used for Nvidia
or put in your own values ...
The populating is of a basic type, with a few small villages and a few towns. Airbases are probably a bit more profusely located than during WWII, but these are fictional and are placed mainly to give a good coverage.
Here are some screenshots, mainly of the islands.

I kept this map at a minimum of objects - to save time and also because it was a sparsely populated area to begin with. So I sincerely hope there is no issue with the objects in this map. I mainly used villages taken from the standard Burma map and added a few harbor installations from Chaco and then made a few basic Australian towns with mostly Norway objects ... airfields are also mainly from Chaco and then reconfigured a bit to give them a different look ...
In this map i concentrated on the different texture sets for New Guinea / Australia and the Islands and also on making reefs and shallow water - which is quite fun to do by the way. If the method on making more than one water color ever gets known I'll be one of the first to try and use it on a map - this would be a good choice with muddy rivers in New Guinea and clear rivers in Queensland ...

Stunning map! D/loaded and, no problems, this is fully flyable ! I have now built a virtual map library with your works of art! Many thanks again,

Well, you've got at least one mission here - the Japanese bombed the airfield at Horn Island and were intercepted by US fighters. I made a coop for it years ago, using some other map as a substitute. Time to dig it out and transfer it, perhaps.
:cheers:
Edit: there was more than one raid, see

Thanks for the info - this means an update with an airfield at Horn Island is in the makes ...
I admit that I'm not so great at digging up historical info on airfields, so if there is anything else in the way of locations of airfields or bases or such, always feel free to let it be known. I'll do my best to incorporate it into an update ...

This should help:
Located at the northern end of Horn Island.
Built by the Australian Civil Constructional Corps and the Department of Main Roads began construction of an advanced airfield on the island in 1940. Construction was completed during January 1942. Horn Island Airfield had two intersecting runways: east-west runway 5000' x 150'. The southeast-northwest runway is 4250' x 150', both surfaced with bitumen and gravel.
- also from PacificWrecks. There's a very small and fuzzy picture as well:

Oh and also we must have Amberly Air Base as it was the Biggest and still is.
It was used by America in WWII.

Squadrons etc are listed.
