[WIP] Map - New Georgia for the PTO - agracier - 23.04.2010

Here's a new map inspired by watching too many episodes of 'the Pacific'. Guadalcanal has already been done and so has Palau, so very finely retextured by redko (a must have, especially for the shallows and coral reefs). Looking along the Solomons the island of New Georgia caught my eye for some reason. This is a map of the islands and surrounding areas with parts of Santa Isabel and Choiseul Islands and a host of lesser ones.

From what i could gather there were 2 airbases, one Japanese at Munda Point and and other American built strip at Segi Point. Both were in odd positions, near to beaches and made of crushed coral. I've tried to use textures reflecting that kind of terrain.

Otherwise it was a simple map to make populating-wise, with a few dozen small villages, most with small wharfs or piers.

All texture slots are in use, except for the 3D forest trees. I think in this case the textures that were used give a good impression of dense vegetation. I've also used several sets of different textures to try and give the islands a somewhat different look.

The Allied flags represent the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, all of which sent troops or naval vessels.

all.ini loa(d) - add 'd' - Sikshoota - 23.04.2010

S' Agracier

Yet another of your great efforts & thanks heaps.
Just an observation with the 'add to all.ini', but it looks as though there should be a 'd' to complete the word 'load'.

Don't burn yourself out with your map making m8, there are all too few with skills such as yours.

Cheers Smile
Sik

Blistering barnacles ... I hope that's not a keelhauling offense ...

Here's a corrected link. Changed primary link as well.

Don't worry about burning out. This map was fun to make, and besides, I'll be away in the summer with no decent machine to work on, so there won't be much from June till September anyway ... there are 2 other maps almost done bar some populating and I'd like to get these out before I leave ...

You know we built the Slot already right? and it's going into the next official version of the game (4.10)
viewtopic.php?t=4853 it took us 9-10 months to build and comes with 6 maps from 6 different time stamps of the campagin.

you can DL it here viewtopic.php?t=4854

it's just that you're about 2 years late on this topic.

Otoh, if it's still not in team pacific "soon" plans, a "rabaul tyo bougainville" map would be most welcome agracier Big Grin

just curious, where did you get that Ar-196 skin for a japanese float plane?

Awesome work again, Agracier.

Can't wait the 4.10!!!
It is true that Slot is already done, and for me it is one of the most beautifull modded maps ever. When it first came out, i spend hours just to fly over it!!
but there are at least 3 diffefent maps of Normandy (IIRC), so one more Slot map is OK too. Actually, i wouldn't mind if somebody could make a smaller DF map about some Islands. I know that most of people want's to have Real flying times, but i'm too lazy for that.
And since this a modded version, one can make his/her own versions of any theater of wars or places that didn't even see any action during WW2.

Good map! Big Grin Thank you!

I have the Slot since I first managed to install maps ... and been using it as well. It's just that i liked the shape and form and configuration of New Georgia and I was itching to do something on the PTO after watching 'the Pacific' (never underestimate the power and influence of Hollywood ... ha ha)

I thought it would be nice to do a version in 1/1 scale ... where the land mass would be larger and somewhat more detailed ... with different textures, and to try out how it would look without 3D trees ... the whole area encompassing the Slot would be far too large for a full 1/1 1pixel=50m map. That scale is the scale i like best when flying ...

Made them for fun mainly: they are not historical as such.

I've got a map of western Java almost finished - as usual it still has to be populated, though that is already about 30-50% done ... luckily many village templates can be used between this one and New Georgia - just a question of shuffling things around a bit ... and I have to figure out what to do about Batavia Stad - make it with European houses and place palm trees all around?

And for fun and to give it a period flavor, I made the Java map in Dutch: 'de Groene Gordel van Smaragd' 'Ons Indiee' en 'Ne'erlands Trots' ... dit voor al mijn noorderburen ... ze mogen ook eens wat in hun taal hebben om overheen te vliegen ...

A member sent me a wonderful period map of the area with the old Dutch names. They are so enchanting and colorful: 'Menseneter Eiland (Canibal Island), Dwars in den Weg Eiland (Dab Smack in the Way Island) and others ... really cute names sometimes, very adventurous sounding, old VOC stuff ...

The Slot IS 1:1 scale. I dont know where people keep getting the idea that the Slot maps are scaled, because they aren't.

That's true. Team pacific did amazing work with The Slot map. On the other hand Agracier's maps has a different style. I don't think that his purpose was to step team Pacifics toes. As far as i understand The Slot is not copyrighted as an area. Satellitedata is freely distributed by NASA. We have at least 20 variations of Spitfire fighters, why not 2 or even 3 different pacific maps. This does not put "original" Slot map in shame. Specially when "THE SLOT" will eventually make it to Official 4.10 patch, which is amazing achievment!! Goncratulations!
Kap
@Agracier. Can't wait the Java map!!
