alternative textures for Lybia map - redko - 01.05.2010

Hi people.

Working on Palau air field i was looking for some sandy textures. I finally decided to make a set of alternatives textures for the great JV69_BADA's Lybia map i'm playing with some Phil_K short campains.

I have always been a fan of deserts, i though i would be interresting to have a set of maps with the same quality of texturing than El Alamein...it could be nice for a great desert campain to have some thing more homogeneous (in terms of textures i mean).

Work is under way since this morning, here are some pics of the kind of textures i want to integrate on the map, soon real in game pice. I think i will release Palau's airfield and this map on the same time. This has been taken for sectors surounding Tobruk.

In comparison to how it would look in reality, those colours are way too cold. They need to be a lot more yellow IMO. I've flown over Egypt before (OK, so not Lybia) but the colours when flying over where really bright and sandy (no pun intended) Wink

Yea i agree. it's the sector taken by the satellite...contrast to high, i have to balance this. i'm working on it, if it doesn't work (every intervention on a texture is distructive) i will take tex more in the center of Lybia. there the color is more close to what you speak about, but it will no represent the tobrouk region in that case.

I really want to make a nice desert

OK, thankyou. I love your perfectionism

Ok so on top you have raw files...and here reworked.

I post this as some were asking for some tutorial to create textures. I think it could help futur map makers to see this step by step. The raw files were a little hard to rework as the satellite pics were over exposed ( it depends of the area covered by Google earth)...but playing a little with contrast and saturation you get after some hours of work something you can use for a map.

Just 6 textures, but more are coming, i want to use all the textures slots to in order to get the maximum of diversity.

I start by creating a "base", a set of 2-3 textures which will cover the most of the map. It must be "neutral", i mean with simple motives, enough detailed to create a theme, but not too much as it will be used in many parts of the map. This base is important because all the next painting step will depend of it. So the rule is start from the easiest and then complexify step by step.

Base

These 2 are very close. 2 textures with little differences help much as a base to avoid repetitive effects on landscape.

Start to complexify
Once i have a base, i create then more detailed textures which describe with a bigger precision the most particular par of the landscape

There is fields close to the coast, i need to create those textures, and mount textures are missing for the moment. If you look with attention will see that textures works 2 by 2 or 2 by 3 on may maps = it helps to make texture being par of a whole, and easier the stransition between one sector of the map to another.

In the "base" set of textures it's a good idea to take parts of one texture and use it on the other textures of the same set. the purpose is the same = make all the textures, sector by sector work together.

...and this is what it makes in flight, the 2 first "in game" pics. All this is not representative of what will be the final release of course. Texture are applied in auto here by load.ini and stock map_t so painting have not even began

In these 2 pics you see the effect on my "base" texture set. It looks like a big one with no repetitive effect...but there is just 2 different textures here. No more.

That really is great! Although IMO when the sun is high, the textures would be a really vivid yellow/goldy colour. This is hard to replicate, as I don't think it's possible for the textures to be able to change in colour temperature in Il-2 which is a shame Wink

Yea right. But maybe with the new Avala's tool there is a way to deal with that aspect. You can play with screen temperature. I haven't tested it now. I still can increase the colour to yellow...

very nice, no pattern effect at all, it will be also usefull to pimp the desert online map with these textures with a new load.ini Smile

Among Finnish maps, desert is my all time favourites. This is an eyeopener for sure.

The thing is that you have captured the colour really well! The thing about light in the desert is that when the sun gets stronger, the colours become warmer and brighter. As far as a normal colour tone goes, I think you have captured it pretty well Wink
