Photoshop crashes. - Serpiko - 19.05.2010
Hello all, maybe some expert skinner can give a piece of advice to a n00bish one (a.k.a. ME :roll: )
I've been using Photoshop 8.0 to make a few skin. I had no problems with Windows Vista. Then I bought a new laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and Photoshop started crashing.
Crashes occour when I try to make a selection with the "magic wand" tool (which should automatically define and select the area whose color is close to the pixel i clicked on). It doesn't crash every time, but it almost always does when using the tool to add a new part to an existing selection. If I restart the program and try to repeat the same command sequence, it crashes again the same way.
I get this message: "Could not complete your request because of a program error". After that the program freezes for a few seconds, then I get Windows message "Adobe Photoshop stopped working" (I'm not sure if this is the exact message in english, since my Windows is in Italian, but I'm pretty sure you all know what message I'm talking about! :-? )
Once it crashed in a different way, and i got some messages which made me figure out the problem. I think crashes occour because the command requires a memory amount which is somewhat considered excessive by Photoshop or by the system. Is that possible? The weird thing is, I had no problems with Win Vista and 2Gb RAM, while now with Win 7 I have 8Gb!
I already tried installing Photoshop in "Programs (x86)" folder first, and then in another folder in a separate HD partition. Crashes persisted in both cases. (MAYBE a little improvement in the separate folder, but not sure about that.)
Any hints? Thx!

Try decreasing ur OS colour settings... Had same problem with Windows 7 Ultimate colour mode, changed it to Win 7 Basic colour mode, works fine now.

Just tried switching to Windows basic theme, but same crash. This time the error message spoke directly about "not enough RAM". Then another window told "pure virtual function call".

You may have a bigger problem than you think, look here

I had a look. Nothing personal, Gumpy, but sites claiming "You-have-a-big-problem-we-have-the-solution-download-it-now" don't inspire much trust in me...

Oh I know don't download anything,I'm just saying you may need to take your computer to a tech for a checkup.

These are the requirements for photoshop 8, i presume your specs meet this, a simple experiment, try running it at the recommended display setting 1024x768 as i used to have ps7 and had the same prob at high settings, or u can try running it in xp emulation.
* 1.6GHz or faster processor
* Microsoft

OK thank you for the hint. I'm pretty sure I meet all the minimums, i'll try with Vista/xp emulation. I'll let you know.
At the moment, I partially solved by working with PS and GIMP at the same time. (GIMP shows no problems with magic wand, but PS achieve better results when switching images from RGB to indexed colors)
