B-50 "Andy Gump" request - Nadia - 23.05.2010
I don't know if someone has given this some thought already (post), but a B-50 would be feasible in IL2.
(We have Tu-4 and KJ-1). Basically would be a B29D variant in disguise (XB-44).
Larger engines
Redesigned engine nacelles and engine mounts
Enlarged vertical tail and rudder (to maintain adequate yaw control during engine-out conditions)
Reinforced wing structure (required due to increased engine mass, larger gyroscopic forces from
larger propeller, greater fuel load, and revised landing gear loading)
Revised routing for engine gases (cooling, intake, exhaust and inter-cooler ducts; also oil lines)
Upgraded fire-control equipment (to control remote turrets)
Landing gear strengthening (takeoff weight increased from 133,500 lb/60,555 kg to 173,000 lb/78,471 kg)
Increased fuel capacity (this was largely addressed by adding
under wing fuel tanks).
Revisions to flight control systems '(the B-29 was already difficult to fly; with its increased weight the B-50 would
have been (-???-) much harder to hand-fly).'
Interesting part is top speed just short of 400 mph (
644 km/h),"faster than many World War II
propeller-powered fighters" ( quote ).
[ B-29 top speed was 574kmh (357mph) and cruise 350kmh (220mph); 350mph true airspeed at 40,000ft.]
Actually B-50 real performance was more like
611 km/h (380mp/h) max, and
393 km/h (244 mph) at cruise.
Boeing Built 371 between 1947 and 1953; in service (nucs, then recon, tanker) until 1965.
It was around during Korean war, (as a what if ?), replaced by B-47 in Strategic Air Command (1955-final).
