Modifying Default Game Maps - DaveOD06 - 17.06.2010
I am attempting to get into making and modifying maps for Il-2 and I have a few questions. I've downloaded and installed everything I need to create and edit maps, read the tutorials, and checked out the software. My current goal is to start out by modifying some existing stock maps created by Oleg that were released with the off the shelf version of the game. In other words, I want to work on maps that have not been modded before. The only problem is I don't know where or how to find the appropriate files I need to do this. I need to get my hands on the following files:
load.ini
actors.static
map_c.tga
map_T.tga
map_h.tga
map_F.tga
ed_m01
etc...
I currently want to do some work on the stock version of the Marianas Islands map to make it more historically accurate, but I don't know where to get these files from. Has anyone done this before and can they provide a step-by-step instruction on how to do it?

If you have a modded game then I believe you find the appropriate files in the MapMods folder.

You need to extract those files from the *.sfs files in your main game directory.
Cheers, Neil

Ah thank you Neil, as you can see I am a complete noob at this. I got things extracted...but what is the difference between the "fb_hfxmaps" files and the "fb_maps" files? im assuming the hfx maps files have something to do with using modded objects and textures and the regular ones have vanilla everything?

Yes I would think so but if you are extacting these from a clean game then IDK. Sorry about above, I said something above but It didn't work for some reason.

For the Marianas project that you have described there would be little advantage to be gained from starting with the existing in-game map.
Have a look at this tutorial. viewtopic.php?f=70&t=14643#p175107
For the map_h (height map) its best to use SRTM satellite data, as shown in the tutorial.
The land/water boundary, map_c can be extracted from the SRTM data too but I prefer to create this by hand working from the best maps I can find.
Decide on the size of your map first, then for 1:1 scale map_c will be 50m per pixel and map_h, map_T etc will be 200m per pixel.
map_c size in pixels must be divisible by 32, because of the way the game engine works.
