FPS Problems - Boosher - 27.07.2010
I've been having this problem for a while now but have seen no means to fix it in the past several years. My Alienware m15x-R1 has been giving me trouble for some time with FPS. The power is there to provide decent framerates and the video card is more than powerful enough for the games I'm running at even their best graphic settings: IL-2, Medieval II: TW, Empire: TW, Mass Effect and ME 2, etc... About a year ago I began having these framerate issues. A game would start up and work decently until a few minutes in, then the FPS would crash to about 3-5 for a minute or two, and then would jump back up to a normal framerate. I've tried BIOS, new driver versions, full HDD wipes and re-installs, etc... nothing doing. Anyone have any ideas how I can squeeze more life out of this PC without major surgery or spending a lot of dough? I'd greatly appreciate it. Here's the DXDiag below:

Re: FPS Problems - *Steppenwolf* - 27.07.2010
Hey, Boosher.
Check out Fireskull's thread on PC optimization, it helped me. Have you tried different graphics settings and resoultions? Are you running anything else in the background, like scans or other programs? Have you turned off any services or processes through task manager? 2.5 isn't that fast these days, but surely it's better than 3-5 fps.
Re: FPS Problems - Boosher - 27.07.2010
I've tried eliminating processes, setting core affinity, hasn't seemed to have done a thing. My most recent attempt involved ditching Symantec Endpoint for Microsoft Security Essentials in the hope it has a smaller footprint. If I missed something let me know.
Re: FPS Problems - Fireskull - 27.07.2010
Hello, Boosher
Does this happen with online play, offline play, or both? I assume both.
This seems to be a memory issue of some kind. Have you done all the things in my tech topic to handle the memory issues? Have you increased your Page File Size? Have you used HaDes il2fb.exe file for inceasing RAM available for IL-2? That's all in my topic.
Computer, Benchmarking, Optimizing, and Tweaking for IL-2:

Re: FPS Problems - Boosher - 28.07.2010
Thanks Fireskull. I've tried increasing the pagefile for all drives on my PC. I'll report back what happens.
EDIT: Increasing the pagefile to max only helped a little bit. The FPS drop is still there. When I first got this computer two years ago I had half the RAM and everything ran smoothly.
Re: FPS Problems - *Steppenwolf* - 28.07.2010
Have you added any hardware besidese RAM? If not, could there be an issue between the RAM and mobo?
Re: FPS Problems -
{HVY-E}Jinxx - 28.07.2010
Boosher,
I realize that you're using MS Security Essentials but, as with all A/V software, it won't catch all.
Just to start with the obvious causes do the following:
1. Check processes for Indexing Service. If it's running, disable it.
2. Un-install MS Security Essentials.
3. Install, if you don't already have it, CCleaner.
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
4. Install, and update, Spyware Blaster (This is your systems condom).
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=15&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef
- After updating, apply all new immunizations.
5. Install, update and run, Spybot Search And Destroy (This is phase 1 of your systems Penicillin Shot).
http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd162.exe
- After immunizing and scanning your system, remove any Spyware, Mal-ware, hostage-ware etc that is found.
6. Install, update and run, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. (This is phase 2 of your systems Penicillin Shot).
http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5756&file=15&evp=693ee0b20204960edfd909666f809b26
- After immunizing and scanning your system, remove any Spyware, Mal-ware, hostage-ware etc that is found.
7. Run CCleaner to remove any un-needed registry entries.
8. If you're running multiple H/D's, run the game from one of the alternate drives (D, E, F etc.)
9. Disable swap file, system restore on any drive other than your Windows Drive.
10. Swap file should only be enable on the primary H/D (Windows) and should be double your ram size. ie. If you have 4 gb of ram, swap file should be 8gb.
- Reboot the system.
**** Most import step ****
11. Download and install Disktrix Ultimate Defrag.
http://www.disktrix.com/downloads/UltimateDefragSetUpTrial.exe
- It's a free 14 day trial, but is well worth the trouble.
- Run the software and move all Windows Files, Boot files to the outside sectors of the drive and the swap file to the End of the drive. This will help alleviate a lot of read/write seek times.
This should help with anything that may be lurking in the background of your system hogging up resources.
If this isn't enough of an improvement, we'll start with the next step of looking at your setup for IL2, Video and hardware pipelines. (Updates to MB BIOS, Video BIOS, Video Drivers etc.)
S!
Re: FPS Problems - Fireskull - 28.07.2010
Good day, everyone
I agree with {HVY-E}Jinxx that the step by stop process of elimination is needed combined with system analysis.
What has changed: You are now using Windows 7 64-bit. Is that the place where the problem is?
Re: FPS Problems - Boosher - 02.08.2010
Thanks guys, running the checks now. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Seemed to do some good work, at least a lot of stuff was cleaned out. None of the software found anything nasty though. I tried re-running everything with different processes, all windows programs on core 0 and games on core 1. Things were better when I did that, but not stutter free. Just a note, IL-2 doesn't stutter very much, but some other games do to a prohibitive extent, and they're not new enough to say my graphics card is having trouble with the hardcore graphics in DX 9.0c.
Re: FPS Problems -
{HVY-E}Jinxx - 04.09.2010
Boosher,
How big is your H/D and how much free space is left where you have the game installed?
How big is your swap file?
How much ram does your system have?

My experience with malware/virusses/slow computers is; just a clean install with Windows. Takes less time than trying to get stuffed grandpa going...

Hawker17 Wrote:My experience with malware/virusses/slow computers is; just a clean install with Windows. Takes less time than trying to get stuffed grandpa going...
Sorry Hawker, but you're only looking at one piece of the puzzle.
We've gotten the Virus/Maleware/Spyware issue dealt with. He's working much better, but not completely stutter free. From what I can see of his specs on his system, he's got less than 50% left on every drive in his system. His swap file is only about 6gb (appears to be dynamic and should be static for best performance) and he has 8gb Ram installed.
He's also already tried doing full wipes and/or reinstalls. The next step is to start checking system settings starting with Windows.
@Boosher,
Your swap file should be about double your ram. In your case you have 4gb of ram. Set your swap file to a min and max of 8gb (fixed size).
One thing I still need to know is what drive the game is installed on. Given your current system, put the game on either the D or E drive.
Only use your C drive for Windows and Main Apps. I keep all of my games on a completely different drive (D). This not only helps with space, but also helps if you ever have to re-format your system. Fairly soon, I will be installing a new SDD drive as my C and will only have Windows on it and will move all of my apps to a separate drive and games to another drive.
After you check this out, we need to start to tweak your video card settings and finally your conf.ini file for IL-2. The reason I do the video card first is to not only ensure IL-2 is working well, but also to get your other games going too.
Let me know how it goes or PM me if you need additional assistance.
S!
Re: FPS Problems - Fireskull - 17.09.2010
Jinxx
By swap file size, do you mean Page File Size?
Fireskull
Re: FPS Problems -
{HVY-E}Jinxx - 17.09.2010
Yes. The terms are interchangeable.
As a general rule, you want to have a swapfile (page file/virtual memory) about twice the size of your system ram.
You also want to make it static Vs. dynamic. This is especially useful for gaming while a dynamic size is more useful for applications.
If your system ram is 4gb and you're primarily a gamer, set your swap file to 8gb min and max.
For applications try setting it to 2gb min and 8gb max.
S!
Re: FPS Problems - Fireskull - 17.09.2010
Jinxx,
I don't remember anything about static or dynamic Page File Size. How would a guy access that to change it?
