GIMP - Russ_Ace - 13.08.2010
I already looked at there sight and couldint find anything so i thought id ask hear. I edited a skin for my personal use and cant figure out how to change the image from a gimp image to a image compatible with IL-2.
Re: Gimp - Lejo - 13.08.2010
You need to convert it to a 1.0 MB, 1024x1024, 8-bits .tga file.
Probably you overlooked one of these things.
Oops, needs to be a .bmp file instead of .tga (thanx KG64_Cnopicilin)
It is possible to make a 8-bits .bmp with GIMP.
In toolbar go to Image/Modus and select Indexed.
In the popup window select first option: 256 colours and click "Convert".
Save as .bmp.

I personally use irfan view, batch convert->batch conversion, output format BMP, check bulk resize->advanced->change color deopth to 256 (8Bpp)->uncheck everything else->OK->Use currect "look-in" directory->Start batch
EDIT: I think gimp cannot make 8 bit images, at least I couldn't.
EDIT2: Skin or repaint? Cockpit etc Repaints in TGA, skins in BMP.

Then you can use Irfan view. Gimp cannot make IL-2 compatible skins.

Best way I know of to convert the files for Il-2 to use is by using Bright.

I use Gimp to make skins all the time - but I also use Brighter to convert them. I save the skin as a 24 bit .bmp, then run it through Brighter and voila.
Re: Gimp - RadPig94 - 13.08.2010
if you have GIMP already installed, you can just go to a Void or any other paintskin done: paintskin>right click> edit with gimp and then you can edit and if you do turn the skin 90 or 180 degrees make sure to put it back where it was turned the first time before after you're done, it'll turn out wonky if you dont turn it back

And that is where Cnopi was wrong.

Man, I love the GIMP--I use it for all my skins.
--Its Free
--It works great
I finish the skins with Bright
Re: Gimp - Guest - 13.08.2010
Well for a Free Program I found Gimp Extremely hard but for Free Photoshop, now I found that extremely easier.

You have never tried my way and you say that I am wrong when I use the programs I already have... Hmm...

As I said before......
Use Bright (it's also free) to convert the image.
It can do multiple files at once through the use of a batch load.
I typically use Bright when I make whole units of skins and want to convert them all at once.
There is very little color degradation and it converts each file in just a few seconds.
S!
