Rudder trim - whiskey111 - 25.08.2010

I would ask for some not realistic mod. Axis aircraft rudder trim.
After long flight I can't feel my wrist. I know that it is not realistic but please... do this :-)

To trim my rudder, I have set my < and > on my keyboard to trim it,

Another option is to get rudder pedeals..

That will take the pressure off your wrist using a twistie stick

Pedals beat handle twist, but you'll need to get used to them. I thought all aircraft have rudder trim.

Nope

Agreed 100%

That and they are more realistic and therfore more imersive..

Rudder on a twist stick just seems gamie to me.. that and you can un-intentionally induce rudder when moving pitch and yaw..

About the only way I would recomend using twist sticks for rudders is if you don't have any legs that work! Wink

And once you do you will never go back!

No some of the early war stuff like the 109s didn't have rudder trime.. They had a trim tab that could be bent to a postion you liked whey parked on the ground, but it was not adjustable from the cockpit, thus the pilot had to apply and hold rudder offsets with his legs.. Can fatige a pilot on a long flight.. But the 109 was never intended for long flight.. Thus it was not really capable of projecting air power like the US planes (38, 47, 51, etc) could and did

I know you're looking for a mod to add rudder trim to the German planes, but in reality a lot of them didn't have rudder trim the way we would like.
Trim was normally set on the ground by the crew chief with a wrench. They would set the trim tabs so that the plane would fly straight at a specified speed.
Usually around 220kts IAS.

The only trim you can affect in the air is elevator trim.

S!

Re: Rudder trim - whiskey111 - 26.08.2010

Game is not realistic. It's just a game.. you know, for fun.
Unfortunatley I don't have pedals rudder. Additionaly, don't have trackIR and separated throttle. Now I see how noobie I am. My old good Cyborg EVO seems to be not enough for such demanding game (about realism of course) like IL-2 Smile

- I know how German single fihters were trimmed. This is why I have written on the beginning "not realistic mod".

Thanks to all for answers Smile

So your not into making it as real as you can?

Ok my bad I didn't realise you just looking for a good shoot-em-up game..

The good news is IL2 has lots of options..

With that said I 'think' if you turn off all the realism settings that you will dumb down the FM such that you wont need any trim for any plane..

Basically set it to arcade settings and you will be good to go!

At least that is what I have been told..

Never tried it myself..

Re: Rudder trim - Plantoid 1 - 26.08.2010

whiskey111:

Here's a trick I worked out years ago before I got rudder pedals. It's a clunky solution and works best if you're only going to fly one type of plane on any given day.

Before firing up Il2 go into the joystick calibration application. Go through the calibration and when you get the "Set z-axis centre" or wording to that effect, twist the joystick the amount you normally hold to the opposite side. If you hold 10 degrees left rudder in the game, then hold 10 degrees right twist in the calibration and hit OK to set the calibration. The joystick will now be offset to the left. Go into the game and you now have rudder offset. Like I said - it's clunky but I got away with that for over a year before I broke down and got pedals. And come to think of it, I've used this method for the rudder pedals but now I mostly fly planes with trim in at least two axis.

Great days all.

Nice soluttion. Unfortunatelly I fly different kinds of aircrafts. But thank you very much for this idea Smile

- ACE-OF-ACES
I'm not looking for realism in IL-2 because this game (even if well moded) is not able to give me at least a minimum level of realism. It's sad but true. However, I fly with all difficult options ON. Does it make me a real pilot ? I hope Smile
In my opinion the main purpose to mod IL-2 is to upgrade playable and feeling of reality. A possibility of rudder trim for people who are not equipped with pedals doesn't change anything for you. You still will fly how you like Smile

I still have a hope for this mod Smile
