IL2 and SSD - Crazy G - 29.09.2010
S!
Does anyone tried IL2 with these new Solid State Drives? I know the loading time will be faster but I wonder if we´ll get a much better FPS.
Thanks,

Of course not better FPS's.
But the loading times are much much better.

Gun,
You are incorrect. Because there are no moving parts in an SSD, there is less time for the game to retrieve information from the HD. This is the most common reason for game stutter I've found with this program. When the game has to retrieve information from the HD, (especially when drawing graphics as they appear), your HD is accessed.
Using an SSD elliviates the need for the read/write head to sweep the HD platter and find the information. The problem is only compounded if the files the game is looking for are fragmented.
Think of an SSD like a light switch.
Which is faster:
Going from the living room to the next room to find the switch and turn it on (HDD).
or
Reaching over and flipping the switch that is 2 inches from you? (SSD).
Remember, not all SSD's are built the same. You still need to check r/w speeds and burst speeds of the drives. There are some out there that are just barely faster than a standard HDD and then there are those that are up to 8x faster. While all this only equates to a few milliseconds of actual time, that time may be just enough to stop some of your stutter. (If all other system problems have already been addressed).
Lastely, SSD's are EXTREMELY expensive right now. Give them another year or two and they should be down considerably.

Well, I got a G.Skill Phoenix Pro 60GB SSD and it didn´t increase fps but it loads faster and notably reduced stutter . Also I have a new rig after a quite crapy and limited mobo/cpu and now I´m running Win 7 64 bits in a Gigabyte X58A UD3R mobo, i7 950 3.06GHz CPU @ 3.68GHz, 6GB of G.Skill DDR3 1600, BFG GTX 260 Max Core and a 550W Corsair PSU so, I can dare to say that IL2 is really smoking now, the way it should be! If SOW-BOB finally comes out in 2011, perhaps a more recent GPU in this rig will do the job nicely. Hope so.

Glad to hear that your problems have gotten much better.
