Dear Gents,
Sad new on July 12th,
At Duxford, a mid-air collidin between a P51 and a skyraider...
The P 51 crashed, the pilot bailed out and didn't suffered injuries (if my informations are right), the Shyraider landed with a damaged wing.
Also a Fokker DRI crash landed during the same day...

Yes, Planemad - too many crashes this year. :-?
That was a very low jump from the plane. Look how the parachute is still opening so close to the ground.

The accident happened on Sunday July 10th. I was there Saturday.
Here's a better video of the collision.

B-17 Liberty Belle was an engine failure, but this is just pilot error.

Is that damage under the tail of the Mustang?

Yes, the Skyraider's wing hit the Mustang's Cooling System door and took out all the hydraulics which is why the flaps were down because they started dropping.

Too bad this bird was lost, but good thing both pilots made it out. Such a collision could have been much worse!
It is worth noting how the Skyraider, designed to take a lot of punishment from AAA, is able to regain control and land with a broken wing, while the "full blooded fighter", that aapparently takes less damage in the collision, is wounded to death.

Sorry, but the less damage thing isn't true. He bailed out because he lost controls, it doesn't matter how rugged the plane is or not if it isn't going to fly and the chance of saving it is low then he had to bail out. What you see in the video doesn't cover the whole thing of what really happened to the Mustang.

That's what I meant with "wounded to death", I understand that losing controls is fatal.
Nevertheless, I'm impressed by the Skyraider landing safely after that.

Got ya, didn't quite understand what that meant. He lost darn near half that wing.
