A flare pistol signal mod request...
#1

Is it possible to make a mod that will add a flare pistol signal indicating that the planes on a runaway are O.K. to take off? IMHO, that'll add a lot of "life" & immersion to the game...
What do you think?

Regards,
Mangas.

P.S.: I'm asking 'cause this method was widely used in Soviet VVS, especially in the early war period since radio was quite rare...

I think that would be pretty cool, they were also used in England during the war, as well as flares from bombers that had wounded aboard to signal the tower, good idea...

If that is possible, can it also be possible to have the flare go off when the ATC says its Ok to land? I am just mad I did not think of this myself

Good Call Mangas!

That would be tought especially considering the fact that the ATC of the airbases are absolute crap.

Heh, that just about sums it up perfectly!

Suggestions -

Standby for T/O - no flare, saves confusion and a small fireworks show wherever an impatient pilot is concerned.
Clear for T/O - flare.

Go around - red flare.
Clear for landing - either white/green (to signify clear) or no flare (to save fireworks displays again).

Wheels not down on approach (or other problem visible to men on ground) - flare to signify to pilot, kind of like in Battle of Britain. Would be handy to signify when gear is not down and locked if cockpit is too badly shot up to tell from inside (I wouldn't half mind if someone would mod the gear/flaps down sticks onto planes either, though that's a whole other story).

Aircraft flares would also be handy, possibly firing on approach when a crew member is wounded (if this will work).

Take what you like from that, I'm just putting thoughts into writing as I go.

The flare thing sounds great.

Rossmum,
Your idea sounds good too, but I think a hole other level of programming may have to go into it.
As for the gear/flaps sticking on planes; believe it or not, I have actually had my plane shot up to the extent that my gear had to be lowered manually because it would not come down regularly. I believe it was the P-47 I had that happen in. I know the F4Fs have manual gear, I wasn't talking about them.

So many things we do in the real world and never give it a thought. Then when we try to input it into a sim, we find how complex our minds really are.
Examples:
Wheels not down on approach. How close to the runway do you need to be for the flare to go off? Would a key press be needed first for gear to activate the landing gear flare?
Would you need to ask the tower for clearance before landing or taking off to get the flare for either?
How far into the air would the flare need to go?
How bright?

Now I'm getting into to much for my feeble mind to comprehend. I guess I'm not as complicated as I thought. Smile
