New generation GPU ATI HD48xx vs nvGTX260/280 and Il2

Some test with Il2?

I can tell you in advance IL2 performance will be about the same or even possibly worse with some of them, because if you'll note the specs the biggest increase for both lines is the number of shaders (unified or otherwise) -- something I'm fairly certain IL2 only uses for water (but I don't know this for a fact). Neither of these cards will help you improve your IL2 experience much if at all, unless you're using a card older than Geforce 7900. Remember, IL2 is a CPU bound game because it has to a multitude of calculations in a very large universe (which gets larger and more complex as you add more planes, ground objects, action, etc, which is why multi online is always the biggest stress test) so if you have an older processor your best upgrade remains a new CPU.

One thing is for sure, that new 280 is NOT worth the money. Absolutely not. The performance increase over an 8800 GS (which costs around or under 100 USD as of this writing) will be anywhere from 40 to 80 percent depending on game, yet it costs well over 6 times as much! The 8800 GS will max out IL2 (except for water, which is a coding issue and not a raw muscle issue) when paired with 2gb of ram and a 3 ghz cpu and you can extend the view distance and use mods with no problems whatsoever.

The ATI model is certain to retain the IL2 problems of its predecessor because of the nature of the similarity in architectural design to the 2000 and 3000 series previously, however, the ATI models look like better buys from an overall standpoint because they are priced MUCH more attractively than this idiotic nvidia nonsense.

looking at the talk on other forums...it seems that the hardware in this case, is well ahead of the software capable of using its new features..

il2 and probably SOW will not make any use of the new capabilities of this CGPU

perhaps I am becoming a bit paranoid in my old age, but I recently replaced my ati X1900Xt with the Nvidia 8800GTS believing that I would be able to see the aircraft in IL2 better.

It was a waste of money as far as I can see. The view looks no different from on to the other.

Trying to figure out which card would be better over another is a work in futility.

I think both ati and nvidia are just building new cards on existing platforms & calling them somelthing else, & then just hype the card with BS advertisements.

I may well be wrong because I don't really understand what actually does what, but my searches on their websites just didn't lead me to any real understanding of a difference in being better from one card to another.

They just say "This card is better then anything on the market" buy me because I say its great...

All deceptive advertising & no substance I think..

PapaG39,

Simple answer of what they mean by "our new card is better":

Better = faster

Image quality does vary a little with the different models and brands, but if you have anything from the last 3 or 4 generations of cards, they will all be capable of showing IL-2 at Perfect settings. The only real difference will be rendering speed (framerate) when not limited by the CPU.

Graphics cards are designed to show what the game engine tells them to, and do so how the engine tells them to do it. They generally don't make a big difference to in-game visibility unless they have hardware or driver bugs that cause incorrect rendering.

Newer games may have more advanced graphics engines that have features not visible on older cards, though.

If you mainly want to see planes more easily, set landscape detail and lighting lower - the dots become more visible against the smoother, less cluttered background.
A lower resolution will also help by making the dots bigger relative to the background.
Finally, turn off AntiAliasing, as this will cause the dots to blend into the overall scene more.

This all makes the game less 'pretty', but will make planes easier to spot (and the game will probably run smoother too).

Cheerio,
JM

i use quad sli- 2 9800gx2's and for il-2 i can say that this is overkill (cards only tested by crysis). i think il-2 is processor intensive. the new cards would possibly yield higher frame rates, but only if your cpu isn't the limiting factor. if your cpu is holding the system back, upgrading the card won't make much of a difference

Thinks like luther. High processor makes an extreme performance. I got the 216 pixel shader Gigabyte 260 OC in high values Anisotropic (16x) and aliasing 16Qx, but help it by the 2 core duo E8500, and 4gb Ram. I know its a medium-high processor but it works excellent.
Indeed, my old gforce 440mx 128mb worked so well except my creepy old machine...
