Am I doing this right?

I just started my first attempt to make a skin for a plane and the main question I have is what format is the best quality when saving.
I chose to op for BMP due to the fact all the other skins I got with a mod were BMP so obviously that works, the main problem I'm having is the colour format.

The only one that seems to work so far is Indexed with only 255 colours, is this the best quality possible for custom plane skins? nothing I try works.
I have a much higher quality version saved so if/when I find the best way for this to work I can do that in the meantime I'm stuck with grainy looking colours.

Here is what I have done so far (It's Not finished).
Also if you would like tell me what you think of my first skin so far =P.

You need to use Bright after saving your skins,it will get rid of the pixelation
This is what I use,it is a stand alone version of Bright and needed if using Gimp to do skins.

After saving your skin, cut and paste the skin into the MyBright folder and run the batch file
It will reduce your skin down from 3 mb to 1 mb ,make it readable for the game and will smooth out the pixelation
while also reducing the colours

Easy

Great thanks.

I do use gimp but I guess its auto indexing doesn't work very well. =/

Nicely done. Work on the nose a bit and it'll be good.

umm...., you know gimp converts images too. You change templates to rgb mode for editing then back to indexed mode and then when you hit "save as" it will give you a defualt name like photo01.psd. You just make sure to name it photo01.bmp. You have to manually type "B" "M" "P" (bitmap) at the end of the name.

when you switched from rgb back to indexed is when gimp changes it from like 25mb (or however large the file was) to 3mb. And then when you change it to .bmp form it goes down to 1mb. Just click yes when it asks to inport or export image.(it asks when you manually change the name, saying .bmp file cant handle transparent layers)

I dont use bright and have never had to. Some ppl like it. But like I said, gimp will convert images. You just need to use rgb mode for editing then switch back to indexed for saving. Then remember to change the format in the name. ete..bmp, .psd,...

Yeh I do all that but what I wanted to know was is 255 indexed colour the best quality you can have? since I'm using so many colour it tends to pixelate it a lot when I convert it to indexed colours from RGB and I was wondering if this was the best/only way it could be done. =/

I still use GIMPs conversion because MyBright doesn't work for me.
