3DS MAX ver 4.2
#1

I have 3DS MAX ver 4.2 but can't seem to open any of the model files extracted....
Help please....

Also I used to make 3d models for Sub Command and Dangerous Waters...I'm not great with aircraft but ships and tanks I can do....

any suggestions as to what could be modelled in that respect. I'm assuming IL-2 modelling rules apply to relatively simple ground units as they do to aircraft..

Which files are you opening? Extracted from where?

Dr. Jones, I think you might have misunderstood?

at close examination, I think he's asking if there are the same weapon modding rules applied to ground units as to aircraft??

But that's just my perspective, he'll have to clarify that himself

I'm meaning the whole process of building a model with different lods and parts in order for it to work.

As for the extracted files, the ones that are created once you have extracted the models from the compressed file....I think it is the .him file...

Creating the full aircraft comparing to creating some vehicles or static meshes, there is quite difference in volume of hard work and detail compared to other static meshes, so even comparing the full working TOW tanks there is more diffucult to create new aircraft in IL2!

About importing meshes in max, you need first to convert them to 3ds or obj format (see (The link is inoperative))
or you can convert to max file trough the DE5 tool.

I converted to 3DS format but MAX 4.2 wouldn't read it...

And I know building an aircraft for IL-2 is more complex than say a tank or field gun but do the same concepts apply, in that the model has to be broken into bits and severl models have to be made for LOD etc...

I can make ships quite well....planes, I don't have the patience.....

You need to enable the option in menu "Output/Other (max) options/Truncate names to 10 chars". 3ds format has official limitation of max 10 chars when storing object names, unofficialy there should not be any limit. For importing 3ds into max this is necessary!
