Imagine how disturbing it must be to me...IMHO, the spits look nice, have lots of firepower, are reasonably maneuverable and fast...and yet, every time i have to fly a spit, i think "ohnoes!"...i'm just uncomfortable with it.

You want ugly? Look at the P47. It may have been an excellent warplane but the Jug wasn't pretty at all.

Anyway, back to the original question. I can only confirm what the others were saying, so the Yaks and La-7's. Personally, i found the I-185 M-82 an excellent fighter-bomber. With its 3 machine cannons it beats the hell outta almost any other plane, and carries quite a lot of rounds, plus bombs or rockets. Just watch out for the cowl flaps disturbing your wiew trough the gunsight! And it can outturn UFOs.
