I would consider that a cheat... I mean thats not even related to dots... thats more of an icon.

I mean possibly changing dot size back to 4.04 days?

it's an icon but it appears that it is a generic "+" for all planes, until at a certain range then team colour and range are displayed... not a dot improvement but does give a similar effect, ie long range "it's a plane" close range "it's a 109" sorta thing.
