Possible to reduce/alter the Cannon flash when impact made?

One of the things that I feel is really too enhanced is the Cannon flash when it strikes another aircraft. The big burst of flame, with it's bright Orange and Yellow flash looks impressive, but very ...errrr....well....wrong!?

Watching Gun Camera footage, the only real difference I see from a Cannon hit is that the damage is considerably more, but I have never seen that large flash or explosion.

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to change the flash to a more 'realistic' flash, which from the footage I have seen is more of a very brief bright spot indicating the hit.

If you watch this clip, between the 49-55 seconds mark, you will see exactly what I mean. It's more of a 'glint' of intense light, rather than a flaming explosion of Yellow and Orange:

So now you've checked the clip out, I hope you see what I mean.

So, is it possible to effectively remove the ball of flame effect, and replace it with a more subtle, but accurate intense spot of light effect?

It would still let you know that the Cannons had hit, it would just be a little more authentic?

Cheers, MP.

How do you know that the rounds fired in that clip are cannon rounds?

Yep, even when I got my quals on the 40mm GLA there was never a large explosion like in the game. Probably a puff of dark smoke with a small flash in the center that lasts a breif second would be more accurate.

Sorry Peter, the guncam I was pointing out is the effect seen in a lot of Gun camera footage, with MG, the plane will lose bits, but unless it's a phosphorescent hit from Tracer, usually it tiny puffs of smoke and debris. The Cannon hit is a flash of explosive a good example of which is the part of the clip I pointed out.

No flames and explosions, just a small puff of dark smoke and bright flash of light, small but intense.

Brophmeister....thx, you know what I mean, cheers, MP.

I don't know about the footage after about 1 minute but I'm certain that the first parts are taken from the movie "Thunderbolt" about the , um, Thunderbolt. Maybe someone else can correct me but if that's the case then we're seeing 50 cal rounds.

I think nocturnum might be right. That definately looks like a 109 being hammered about the 45 second mark.

Nocturnum, you are correct they are 50.cal, so maybe I am mistaken in the ammunition.

However, I would still appreciate discussion about the IL2 effect, as I think that the hits that I relate to, would still suite the actual visual effect of a cannon hit, rather than the plume of flaming explosion we have now.

As the damage model cannot be changed, so we can't have huge bits being blown off (other than what we already have) I think the cannon damage would be larger than the 50.cal hits, but I still think the flash would be very similar, just more internal and external damage would result from the hit....WHICH I'M NOT ASKING FOR!!! just in-case it looked like going OT Wink

So, I think that I am mistaken in the ammunition striking the plane, but I think the effect is/would be more effective than the 'comic' explosion we have now....even if the colur was desaturated from the explosion, I think it would look better....just not what it is at the moment!

New clip of 109 attack on Hurricane here about 1 min 40 into the clip:

last clip:

Shows a lot of hits, but again, only a brief flash with a puff of black smoke...

So opinions welcome, but I think it's really too exaggerated in the game,

Completely agree on this - IL-2 cannon hits don't look like the ones in guncamera footage. And I'm looking for a mod that will fix it. The best cannon hit in WWII sim I saw were in CFS2. In EAW they look also quite good.

Yea this is a thing i wanted to modify for a while now. I think i may know how to do it. Give me a day or two to look into it.

Agreed Smile

The large flash though helpfull is a bit over the top, I would settle for a smaller flash and larger smoke puff.

I hope this one do'able

UPDATE:

I found the files i need and found out how the formention effect works (file structure and etc..). Gonna test it out tommorow, i think i may have nailed this. Big Grin Will start a new thread in WIP if i can get it to work properly.

Success!!!

I have successfully put the .50's flash onto the 20mm's impact. Only problem is the effects for the Cannon hits are layered in a wierd way. Lots of wierd variables to learn, but i'm working on it.

Here is a "sample" Mind you i didn't change size or anything yet.... Smile This was from some early testing i did. It may look like the previous effect, but in that flash is a .50 flash, huge in size... Imagine this flash, much much smaller with a less round shape.

I may also tweak the regular small caliber flashes to be more realistic..

I gotta get some sleep now. will work on it more tommorow. Be sure Smile
