Community systematic map building guide: who wants to help?
#1

Maybe we can write together such a guide?
It needs discussing the topics to be covered and the order this topics are covered. There are already particular topics covered in the tutorial sticky, some are spread all over the forum, perhaps it's not too hard to assemble them and to fill the gaps?
So anyone willing?

lowfighter, I've put together a pretty good compilation so far from various posts, personal help and some of my own limited experiences so far. It's not very well organized but I've put it all on a WORD document so far. It might make a good starting point unless one of the other more experienced map makers already has a more in depth document.

2bits, possible to upload it somewhere? It might be a good starting point!
I hope I can open it (since I don't have Microsoft Word) :?

Great minds think alike! I did something very similar over the past few days, and I would be happy to share it and allow it to be further edited, combined with 2bits', etc. just tell me where to send it.

Dleg, the idea would be to upload these files somewhere such that everyone can download and comment etc. I don't have any uploading account...

ok guys , let Dleg start thread with d/l link to his Q/A .... any comments and changes suggestions should be posted in that thread so he may alter his document . Once it gets finished i'll upload it as pdf on AAA.

Please , bear in mind that some things may be achieved in several different ways ( one may prefer one system , someone may prefer different) so some kind of agreement must be made regarding the most useful and simple process . Also there is use of different graphic editors so we must decide which ones will get covered ( Photoshop, Paintshop pro, Gimp, Paint.net....)

I'll make sure that thread remain clean and on topic as much as i can .

Here's what I've collected so far. Some topics are out of order and it's very crudely organized with some duplicate information. It's very incomplete but it has some essentials in it.

OK here's mine:

I've got it organized by map type. I think a logical organizational scheme would be to introduce map making in terms of the required files (map_c, actors.static, etc.), and then follow with "chapters" on each. Using the headers function in Word, an automatic table of contents can be created, which then can become a clickable TOC once converted to pdf.

Once I have some time later this week, I will combine 2bit's collection into mine and clean up the format a bit.

What I would really like to have, is a basic descrption of the files that are needed for a working map, a brief description of what each file does, and very brief description of how each is made. You know, a basic introduction, of sorts, and then an intro paragraph for each map file type.

I think that, for now, that's all we really need. At some point in the future, the collected bits of wisdome would probably be combined into a narrative / tutorial that would take up less space.

Oh yeah - a really useful appendix would be a complete texture catalog for map_T editing. Was one ever compiled?
