P-51 Howl
#1

Hi i was wondering if this was something all mustangs did, and if it could possibly be included into future sound mods.

I once saw a swiss P-51d performing on an airshow with aerobatics - everytime the Mustang dived and reached a certain speed it emitted a hair-raising whining sound almost like a siren.
I read that this is an effect of the airfoil-contour the wings have.

that sounds like the CAC13 boomerang

on the boomer it is emitted when the air is pushed over the wings and the .30 cal gunports it makes a whistle sound

but thats a different story :d

but i would like to have it IF it had if

Huh ?? i dont get you

Anyway. ive been to several airshow's where i heard this Hair raising sound, I really think it would be a Amazing add to the P51.

Im not sure how we could get this implemented but maby we could modify the Dive sound and add it only to the P51 ??

To any sound modder, Please pick this up :-)

The famous Mustang whistle is caused by the air flow over the gun ports at high angles of attack. It's difficult to see how this could be simulated in game but it would be nice.

search functions are your friend.

this is clone of a post i made about 4 months ago asking for the same thing.

eliot had made some fantastic sounds for the merlin and i asked him to take a look at the howl as well. not sure where it all netted out.

its actually the airflow over the oil cooler, i have looked into this and the result was that the sound could not be added due to game limitations...

what do you mean you have that installed and it doesnt work? Any way, i am sure if i did some dabbling i could replace the external dive sound with that sound of a whistle, so when you did a flyby at 370Mph+ it would sound like that, but to make it that loud it wouldnt sound right when you were on externals. Maybe there is some sort of coding that can be done to allow this also.

Perhaps have two dive sounds, one that come on normal and a louder one for when you are going even faster.

replacing the dive sound worked, but at the cost of losing it.
And for the two dive sounds ? i tried that, but after many hours of making adjustments, could not get the prs file to accept it for the purpose that the mustang needed it. left me stumped :?

I'll need to dig up the source but I read somewhere about a P-51 owner who taped over the gun ports on his aircraft. The 'howl' or whistle was muted or significantly reduced enough to confirm that it was indeed the gun ports.

ahh, the game of cat and mouse begins , ok, i have frequented many airshows and even spoke to one of the pilots, they all said the same thing, it was the scoop under the frame that created the sound, and to confirm this i will also post here , when i find the relevant documentation, the links

p.s. if it was the gunports, would it not be the case that more planes would make the same howel ?

Possibly, though the particular shape of the gun ports may be a factor.

Anyway, here's a link. Not saying it's conclusive but at least the theory was put to the test:
