A slightly modified "hit sound" UPDATED.
#1

Hello All...

*Edit* I talked with a couple of people and decided to offer the version of the "hits" without the debris rattling about. This is just the bullet hits with reverb & EQ. I included an mp3 with a before & after sound clip (just play it in your favorite music app) so you can hear the difference. Hope you enjoy. Cheers

I have taken the sound sample of bullets hitting "your aircraft" (the one you, as a player fly in) and "tweaked" it a little bit. I found the sound that came with the "unified installer V1" to be a bit too "dry"...and I felt that it needs a bit of atmosphere, so I added some (adds to the immersion).

Give it a listen and if you think its better just drop it into the game & replace the one that is their (You kind of have to try it in-game to hear what I'm doing)... The correct file path is: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 / files / Samples. Just open the Samples folder then drop the WAVE Sound "exp3_11" in their (back up the original in case you change your mind) replacing the "original".

Thanks to who-ever collected or created the sound that I'm tweaking...Please enjoy, and let me know what you think...

Hello,

Your sample sound is ok, but the "ambiance" after the impact is a bit too long I think. What if you get hit simultaneously by different bullets? The sounds would overlap and that would be confusing to the human hear I believe...
Maybe you should add some echo to the initial bullet impact and shorten the aftermath sound a little so as to be more realistic.

Also, maybe an idea would be to change the bullet impact sound depending on the localization of the impact on the plane: let me explain quickly: if your BF-109G gets hit on the right wing, then you (the pilot) will hear the bullet impact on the right speaker . Same thing for the left wing.
But if shot under the fuselage, then the sound would come from where?(maybe soften the sound a little bit, because there is more metal between the pilot and under the fuselage than through the window...)

I'm no expert un acoustic, but I believe it would be quite easy with Audacity or another audio editing program to add "sound localization" in Sturmovik..

Last, has anybody thought about adding nature and climate sounds during takeoff and landing such as wind sound (turbulences, thunder, etc) or tree branches sounds and other sounds from the natural world? That would be a great immersion..

Good dau.

Good day

It doesn't seem to overlap (at least when I tried it) It seems that the program re-starts the impact sound every time your hit...you kind of have to try it in-game to hear how the "tail sound" works.

But I will give things a think...thanks for the feedback.

Strictly speaking the interior of the airplane is too small to produce an echo...instead I added a very tight "bright" reverb to simulate the metal interior of the "aluminum can" and give it some depth. I also added some bass around 200Hz to give the impact some "oomph". The "tail sound" is the sound of damage...

We need here ideally a WWII fighter pilot veteran that experienced being shot in flight who can tell us his bullet sound experience. But will he be able to really remember in detail how was the sound of the bullet ripping through the metal skin of his aircraft.

I did not have that experience but let's give it a thought.

I do not know if any of you have been in the cockpit of a piston fighter (all metal) with a 1000+ horsepower piston engine at combat power and manifold pressure through the sky.

The sound is simply deafening. And you have a helmet (albeit in leather at that time but still) headphones and even ear plugs.
Do not forget that you as a pilot are very near to the firewall, engine, exhaust and finally do not forget the huge propellers which also produce a lot of noise. You do not have mufflers or silencers.

I have experienced it but at much less power level and not in combat but doing simulated attack figures, and still the noise is deafening. After one hour I needed some time to get back my full hearing sensitivity. And I had a modern helmet with integrated headphones.
The combat pilots would fly for hours and hours and hours so we can only imagine.

Nobody of us plays the game with the real engine sound level in our headphones or in the room.

Now imagine that you are in the heat of the combat with hard manouvers just to avoid being shot, and maybe trying to shoot the other guy, getting a lot of G forces and with your head turning all around to permanently scan for the danger and a very high adrenaline level.

I doubt that in the heat of a combat and when finally hit the pilot would have time to analyse how was the sound.

My conclusion is that either he has been so badly shot that he may have heard some noise but will not make it to tell us about his experience, or he was to occupied to bail out and save his life and probably not remember to much about it.

So very probably the only real feeling is not the sound of the bullet punching the metal skin, but physical thumps or impact vibrations due to the hit, or explosions. I doubt that a fighter pilot would feel more than that.

The ideal case would be, to be a sitting duck, with a dead engine, propeller stuck, slow speed (to avoid to have too much air flow sound) and someone shooting and hitting you. But you can easily imagine that in those suicidal conditions the pilot finally knew what the real sound was, but he never came back to tell us. :?:

Multiple sound files can be played together through the presets file. Maybe we can get bullet and cannon hits together? It's food for thought.
