Sound mod request: pneumatic (air) brakes!
#1

Was trying to convince Viikate to add some custom sounds for fokker.. but then I thought that several other planes used compressed air brakes aswell so somekinda unified mod would be better choice methinks. I think it would add bit more immersion to casual flying.
Atleast most of british and soviet aircraft did have these.
As I know pretty much nothing about sound editing I think some1 else might be better suited for the job Tongue Also bit busy with textures at the moment. Generally just *psssht* everytime brake button is released. Maybe some truck or compressor sound would suit, but atleast AN-2's still buzzin' around make some nice sounds 8)

Couple clips:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mNKUerL ... re=related AN-2 again.. park brake release and some good sounds @ 6:20

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKUTUwUI ... re=related Yet another AN-2.. bush piloting, some hwy braking.. nice external sound

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIPX5ZHi ... re=related Hurricane.. bit faint sounds, but still there

Maybe these could suit: http://www.freesound.org/tagsViewSingle.php?id=7278

The use of compressed air to operate the brakes in aircraft is actually quite rare, hydraulically controlled brakes are by far the most common. The squeal you hear in aircraft brakes is simply from the friction between the brake rotor and pads.

Yes, hydraulic systems are indeed most common way nowadays. But using 'em during ww2 when aircraft we're much lighter and didn't require hydraulics to operate every surface makes lots of sense.
Pneumatic brakes had lots of shortcomings, but most fighters needed compressor for gun loading and some instruments so using same supply would make an easy choise.

Then there was the constant weight issue.. imagine barrel filled with hydraulic fluid vs same thing filled with compressed air. Also minor leakages would hurt less pneumatic system since compressor replenishes reservoir.

Anyways the mod would also require some research to apply it for correct aircraft. All US. had hydraulic systems I think. Gladiators, hurris, spits, lancs.. all britis had 'em I suspect. Falco & freccia from Italy.. suspecting all macchis too. French moranes had 'em. I-16/153 and yak-3 from russians. Since yak-3 had, I'm suspecting whole yak family had.. likely all soviet fighters knowing their aim for lightness.

Hey Guys,

I guess this mod should be do-able if one knew what the name of the sound file is that is used for the stock brake sound in the game, then just replace it with "pffft" sound.

Any takers :?:
