FOV switch - 'wide'/'gunsight' only (no 'normal' view)
#1

Hi everybody! Smile
Because of some joystick buttons assignment problems, I'd like to take advantage of the "Toggle FOV" command in the IL2 command list.
I like the idea, but I don't really like the fact that it actually switches between 'wide'/'normal'/'gunsight' views.
I find it rather annoying because I have to press the button twice in order to change from 'wide' to 'gunsight' views and while dogfighting I often get confused (or, worse, shot down eheh!). 8)
Is there a way to change this command so that it switches between 'gunsight view' and ' wide view' only? What kind of file should I change?
I tried fooling around with "controls_ru.properties" in the files\i18n folder, but with no results. That's not meant to manage this kind of stuff I guess...
Anyone can help me? I guess this should be easy to fix, but I don't know how... :?
Any help would be muuuuch appreciated! Wink
Cheers.

Mate, depending on your joystick you may be able to make a profile which uses a switch/button whatever to toggle between "Gunsight View" and "FOV 35". I know with the Cougar it would only be matter of programming it and would take about 2 minutes.

Otherwise, if you have a hat you don't fully utilise, program the two views to opposite directions on it - this is what I used to do before I got the kitty

A joystick profile? Mmm... Unfortunately not! Cry
I've got a Saitek X-45. It's a good joystick, but I had some minor software issues with the programming function (probably because it's one of the early models), so I gave it up. And both of the hat switches are fully used (I use them for looking around and trimming).
So a switch command between wide and gunsight views would be perfect! I'm asking because I don't think this would be so difficult to modify...
Anyone knows which files need to be modified and how can I rework them pls? :?

download the resent software from the Saitek web sight...

p.s. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound glib...Before I got "TrackIR w/6DOF" I used the same "toggle view" button that you tried. I didn't seem to have as much of a problem as you do with the system...even if I toggled past the view I needed I just had to click again. It doesn't really take that long. I have used both systems (buttons & hat switch, and TrackIR) and it takes almost the same amount of time to click (even if I have to re-click) as turn my head. What you really need to do is get TrackIR or try "FreeTrack" (one of the free alternatives).

Another thing you could look for is a "gaming Macro program" that works for ya...I'm really surprised that the later saitek program doesn't work for you... Sad

I had a Saitek X45 at one time. Do you use all the buttons on your throttle? you could try using the 3 position switch on that. Do you use Magic Mouse with the throttle? If not you can probably program one of those butons to do what you want to do.

I own the Saitek X52 now. Once I learned how to make the macros, I programmed most of my flying options so I rarely have to remove may hands from the HOTAS. Even programed one for those pesky manual gear planes to raise and lower the gear.

confused.. I have both x45 and x52.. just assign a button to one view, and another to gunsight view. I have a switch on the throttle done that way - move it right and it zooms in, move it left and it zooms out. I don't use any software for either stick - just built in windows stuff.

Ok guys, you know... the X-45 is a good joystick, pretty accurate and with lots of switches that really make it a HOTAS device.
Its only fault is probably its 'hardness' to move, and the base is not always heavy enough to hold it in place! So when I need to execute some particularly accurate manoeuvers (for example while chasing an enemy plane, aiming or firing my guns), I've got to leave the throttle for a moment, grab the base of the stick with my left hand to hold it firmly in place, and move the stick with my right hand for a more precise movement.
And zoom buttons are fundamental when attacking or aiming the guns!
That's why I need to have my zoom keys on the stick rather than on the throttle.
Here's my current X-45 configuration:

Everything works ok until I'm flying a plane that only has guns (just 1 firing button).
But with planes that have both MG and cannons (2 fire buttons) the number of switches on my stick is not enough anymore!
So I'd like to substitute my 'wide view' and 'gunsight view' switches with a single 'wide/gunsight views' toggle, just like this:

Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist sometimes, but I would just like to know if it's possible to change the way that 'FOV toggle' works.
'Wide-gunsight' views only, WITHOUT 'normal view'. That'd be more functional IMO. That's all.
What do you think? Is it possible to change the way this toggle works? Which files need to be modified? I suspect the answer lies in those hashed files (those ones named like: AED23A24CF6...)

along this subject...

Is there any way to get a more continuous zoom feature? Right now my joystick has buttons programmed for increase/decrease zoom. Every time I hit one or the other it changes the FOV by 10.

Does anyone know if there's any way to program the controls so that if I were to hold a button, it would continuously zoom in or out?

thanks!
