Why Can't the Infantry Walk on Water?
#16

ziggy,

Brilliant! Thanks so much for the precise, detailed tutorial on this. I have copied/pasted the info to my MTD (Mod Tweaks Database) file.
If this forum had Kudos I'd give you + five and add a bowing emoticon.

Thank you!

Thank you, Ziggy-22!

Your detailed tutorial is really helpful. I will try it out tonight and see if I can finally get these guys to show up aboard ship.

Thanks again,

Hello Ziggy-22,

I tried the "infantry cloning" and it worked like a charm. With the new height added, I could plant soldiers all over troop transport ships and other vessels. They even sank with the vessel, when I torpedoed it, just to see if the soldiers would remain floating in the air, while their ship went down from underneath them. But, they didn't, they seem to have gone down with the ship.
However, the "uncloned" soldiers still don't show up over water. Perhaps, I should just copy and paste every folder in the infantry mod, according to your tutorial, only without adding the line about height. Perhaps then they'll show up.
By the way, what is a good method to take screen shots? Do I need additional software for that?

Thanks again for your help,

RB

Hi bohr-r,

I,m pleased to hear that it worked for you, dont know what the problem could be with your uncloned infantry, perhaps you could clone them at a height of 0.01 and then their feet would be just above water/ground level but not enough to notice to much. All we need now is
some cargo netting down the side of the ship for them to scramble down! You dont need extra software for the pics, i just 'clicked on' one of the infantry on the ship in FMB and used him as a mobile marker to zoom in and out on and then pressed the 'Print Screen' button (next to F12) to take the pic, uploaded to photobucket and then to here, job done!

Hi Ziggy-22,

I'd love to post some screen shots of my infantry experiments. However, the "PrtScn" button does not seem to work. When I press it, nothing happens. Where would Windows XP save screen prints? Perhaps in a "Temp" folder? Or do I need to assign a location before I can take a screen shot? As you can see, I am not the most computer-literate person. Therefore, I would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks,

RB

Hi bohr-r

when you press ' print screen' it saves the prints directly to your il2 root folder as tga files, it will
only save about 16 or so but you can move them from there to where you want them.

I should have gone into a bit more detail in that last post really, so heres a bit more info.
When you press 'print screen' button it gives no indication that you've taken your screenshot, you just have to go and look in your il2 root folder and they should be there. You can take screenshots in game as well just pause your game in the middle of the action and again press 'printscreen'. There is also a good free program available called FRAPS which you can use to capture screenshots, it also lets you check your frame rates. recommended!
Now when you've found your new shots in il2 root directory they will be in tga format, if you right click on them you can send them onto 'my documents' and from there to 'my pictures'. In order to upload them here they will need to be converted to jpeg images, i use a free software called irfanview which easily converts them. Next you need to join an image sharing site like photobucket and upload your pics there, its all self explanetry and easy enough to do. From there you can then upload them to AAA. Its not as complicated as it sounds but if you need more help just ask

Hi Ziggy-22,

Thanks for your instructions. I managed to take the screens shots I wanted, have converted them to jpg format and have uploaded them to my photobucket account. However, so far, I couldn't figure out how to get them to appear here.

Do I need to post the url here? Like this:

It's all pretty confusing to me. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

RB

Hi Ziggy-22,

Looks like it worked. The previous image and the next one show infantry objects on the decks of a submarine and a torpedo boat in FMB view. The third image shows the same scene from an in-game perspective. I did make some progress on this as the standing guys on the sub are now showing up in game. I don't what I did to the FMB, but voila, there they are. However, the sitting fellows and the folks on the torpedo boat are still invisible in-game. How did the Axis powers ever lose the war, when they had invisible warriors like that?

Here is the in-game picture:

Please let me know what you think of these, especially the mysteriously disappearing crew mates.

Thanks,

RB

HI Bohr-r

I see that you're getting the hang of things now, screen shots look great, very inventive! i like the guys in the water, are they doing a spot of welding? would never have thought of that and the guys on the boats using hand signals to communicate. I cant figure out your vanishing crew men, i've tried all the figures at various heights on water and land and looked into their files but cant fathom it out, it all works fine for me every time, i was hoping to solve this for you but cant seem to get to the root of the problem, maybe you have a 'Bermuda triangle' thing going on! If i do get to the bottom of it then i'll let you know, in the mean time i look forward to more screen shots and inventive ideas, keep up the good work mate!

HI Ziggy-22,

Thank you for your kind words. The pictures of the sub and the s-boat are part of the first mission of a fictional campaign I am building for the Fw-190 torpedo plane, based on the Norway map.

In the first mission, the player's unit needs to come to the rescue of a damaged German sub. Repairs are going on (welding), while an s-boat assissts. However, the enemy has already vectored a destroyer into the area. The destroyer is getting closer and has already opened fire by the time the player's unit (6 Fw-190s) arrives on the scene. Thus, the six German fighters are tasked to sink the destroyer.

Here are some screen shots from the mission, which is still under construction.

Taking off from home base, my "wing man" off to starboard.

I guess he'll stay on the ground for today after all.

This is what I see through my gun sight: target in the cross hairs.

This is what they see from aboard the destroyer.

Hope you'll like the screen shots. Any comments would be appreciated.

By the way, I haven't been able to solve the puzzle of the invisible s-boat crew yet. Perhaps in my infantry mod, all the guys were equipped with some top secret 007 gadget, or they are just very, very shy.

Well, enjoy,

RB

Hi Bohr-r

Thats an interesting mission, you've got a good imagination perhaps you should become a mission builder and post them online, your wingman is going to have to peddle faster than that if he wants to get airbourne! Just by coincidence i'm building a mission using 2 fictional islands off the Norwegian coast, ive used the Pacific islands map and re-textured it to look a bit like Norway, got a long way to go yet. Great pics again, that destroyer doesn't have a chance! here are a couple of my island
