Request: Overcast weather
#1

What are the game limitations for this. The clouds we have in game sure look nice but they are all cumulus look alikes. (cotton clouds)
In europe we often totally overcast. Basically a totally grey sky from horizon to horizon.
The closest we come to this in IL2 is to put lots of cumulus clouds together. Well this is bad for 2 reasons. First it doesnt look realistic to add so many cumulus clouds together in game to simulate overcast, second it eats FPS and loads of it!!!
What are the game limitations to make a low cloud base with a single fairly thick layer of stratus clouds. This would add alot to the game.

This has been requested from very early on the development of IL-2. Even from 1C. Not sure if anyone has taken the time to see if a decent solid overcast with good visibility and stable air underneath is even possible without huge amounts of new code. This has been requested a number of time over the years.

The closest thing we have right now is using the wind mod to cut off the turbulence with heavy cloud cover.

What about heavier " cloud noise" like in Benders sky? He put in cloud noise. Can it be made to look overcast?

Now that is a bloody good idea Thrud, however an overcast weather will sit not just over islands but cover a whole map!! Maybe half of the Normandie map for example. Is that possible???

Anyway hope somone will pick up ur idea!

I thought it was a great idea in the original thread and I still do. Clouds exist in the game. They can be altered visually - thank you Rus Andrey, Bender et al.
They could be coded as objects - tell me I am wrong computer guys. Objects can be set to move in FMB - See FMB. Sure some characteristics need to be written into code, but that is just the doing of it. How big are they? How fast do they move? What altitude are they centred at - can this altitude change like er , um perhaps an aircraft?
I am being a bit flippant, but it is because I am excited about this - this is a threshold here guys, and short of writing the code, all the necessary components to do it are already in the game. It's like radar. It is simply a re-application of the info the game already has; it just needs to be adjusted...

No unfortunately I don't write any code let alone java, but I do have a mate who does, and while he is not delving (yet) into IL2, I have bashed ideas off him from time to time, and his view is that if the game engine already engages the characteristics of what you want to adjust (in terms of clouds that would be their visuals, Their size, their positions, their movement and their effect on aircraft) then you can get it into the game.

I know there is boatloads of talent out there guys. This is doable. Keep the post and the idea alive - we are getting radar and there were a hell of a lot of posts about how impossible that was!

A very enthused
