Big Smoke cloud question/mod request
#1

I'm wondering if anyone has put together a smoke object for the FMB that would create a volcano like smoke cloud? Would it be too much of a frame rate killer?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm trying to put together some missions for the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 and I've read that on the morning of May 27, 1940 the oil tanks at Dunkirk were burning and left a huge cloud of black smoke that covered most of the city and surrounding area. I also recall reading that when Stalingrad was bombed in August of '42 there were also huge smoke clouds. Unless I'm missing something, the stock smoke options in the FBM could not simulate this.

Thanks

If smokes clouds were not FPS killer , it would have been implemented a long
time ago especially first for burning cities .
Game engine is old and not exactly good at handing smoke particles .
It was struggling with much better configured 500lb bomb explosion smoke effect and
couldn't be used for public release .
It's already stretching graphics cards with cities smokes effects we have already .
It would be nice but a lot of needed smokes particles will kill any graphics card thus far
with IL2 engine .

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I thought I'd hear, but I had to ask.

Yes it will be a fps killer

Instead of using the usual moving smoke effect on a bigger scale, it might be possible to use the stationary fog effect, but reshaped into a large smoke column and recoloured. This should not be such a bad fps issue.

Some lateral thinking required on this one.

What's the 'stationary fog effect' is it something in the mission builder?

ever flown early in the morning and seen low ground fog? thats what he's talking about. I personally think making an object similar to a cloud or something but smokey is the key to a mod like this.
