Come On Guys, Get Outta There!

A February afternoon in 1944 as a formation of B17's head across eastern France on their way to England, coming under attack from a handful of long nose Focke-Wulfs.

If anyone thinks the angle of smoke is odd, consider what happened. The 190's, two of them, attacked the No.4 bomber and shot it up pretty bad. The righ engines lost power immediately, and the aeroplane began to turn and bank with all the power on the left side. The pilot realised something was up (obviously) and cut power to the left engines whilst he tried to level the aeroplane. He couldn't. Without any effective control left the B17 began a terminal sideslip.

The sky is a mix of the original IL2 screenshot plus an overlaid photograph of a wintery but sunny sky, which is why there's an incorrect 'lower atmosphere' cloud in the screen centre. That was actually the easy bit in making the pic. The contrails were layer after layer of effects and expansion (hardly any of which did what I wanted) and as for picking out the stray pixels on the added bomber stream... AAAAARGH!
