Back on topic, here are my PC specs:

CPU: intel core2 duo processor; 2.0 mhz
GPU: ATI HD4650 (512mb)
RAM: 4gb

I found that using the afore-posted method of using both cores in the game has greatly increased my performance, so I really recommend trying it out.

I've got IL-2 running just fine on my rig, which is admittedly getting long in the tooth.

Pertinent specs:
  • AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @2.2GHz (200MHz overclock, single core CPU)
  • nVidia GeForce 7800GT 256MB
  • 2GB (2x 1GB) G.Skill DDR1 (PC3200) RAM
  • Windows XP Professional
  • 17" monitor with a max resoultion of 1280 x 1024

Only get stuttering when close enough to a large city to see all the buildings, and I've been told this is more a problem with how IL-2 addresses memory than with the power of my hardware. The only fixes seem to be for 64-bit operating systems, which I don't have.

I am very glad that IL-2 fans are taking notice of this topic. The amount of research and development is an expression of my love for people and IL-2. If you return at least once per week, then somewhere in it will be additions and improvements. Please refer people to this topic where appropriate. Not only is the intruction itself useful, there is a bunch of links to other topics and websites by other people who are very helpful.

Hi,

Since you only get stuttering from the city scenes when you fly close, I have several recommendations:

1) Increase your Page File Size. Instruction on this is in my tech help. Look at the table of contents in the first post. The post for the Page File Size is on the same web page. Though this will not help stuttering directly, if you increae the Page File Size, then the system can use it for temporary data storage. Maps and everything stationary on them is a perfect example of this resource being utilized. This probably will help you, since you only have about 2 GB of RAM.

2) Switch to Vertical Sync ON. The reason for this is that you do not need any more FPS than 60. Your monitor refresh rate should be set to 60. Change it to 60 hz if you can. With Vertical Sync limited to the monitor, this will free more processing for graphics quality instead of creating more frames per second. This is how we, as CEOs of our system, supervise our resources.

3) Simply do not fly too close to towns. In the real war, pilots would fly near towns only to bomb, strafe, or recon. The deadly danger of anti-aircraft fire kept pilots from sight seeing over towns! Therefore, this would be more realistic combat tactics, so you can think of it as more immersive.

Note: By "flying close to cities" I mean within 5000m altitude and many kilometres away. At 6000+ metres altitude the problem vanishes. 8)

Edit: what is the name of the function in the conf.ini to set it to VSYNC? I don't want to use the in-game menu since that also resets every other value to whatever the menu has as the default "Perfect" settings. Also, what is the function to set in-game refresh rate? I've currently got my drivers enforcing a 75Hz refresh, and I'd rather have an in-game 60Hz than a universal 60Hz.

Good day,

The monitor refresh rate can be accessed in my Windows OS by following these steps:

Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings > Advanced Settings > Monitor > Screen refresh rate.

This should be set by an IL-2 user to 60 hz, however in some systems this is not adjustable. The 60 hz is all a person needs, so why a manufacturer would go higher is beyond me. The 60 hz is the AC electrical power cycle in the United States of America and other countries.

Also, in some countries this might be a bit lower to match the alternating current in their power utility grid. In this case, an IL-2 user should leave the monitor refresh rate matched to the AC electrical supply of the home country.



The Vertical Sync that I use is enforced by the nHancer program. Originally, I only switched this in the nVidia Control Panel. I do not know where it is found in the conf.ini, however, I do know that whatever you have in your graphics Control Panel will automatically over ride and reset your attempt to alter the conf.ini In other words, you must change the Vertical Sync either from the graphics Conrol Panel or the nHancer one.

Another option with the cities effecting the stuttering is to reduce your graphics quality settings. I know that you don't want to do that. Using Anisotropic Filtering instead of other methods of getting clarity at distances is the best option.

Different models of computers will need various settings, so you'll have to experiment with these issues. This is the main reason why I have been vague or generally speaking in my technical help topic. Being too specific in some areas would confuse those guys who would expect great results when actually the system they need requires another combination of settings, hence the need for each user to Benchmark his own IL-2. :wink:

Well, I knew how to enforce the refresh rate universally. Most games, however, have an in-game setting so that while running, your monitor refreshes at the rate you selected. I prefer to have mine at 75Hz generally because I can tell a difference between 30fps and 100, or even 100 versus 140. It's a subtle difference, but it's there.

As for the rest, I can't update my drivers and I'll tell you why. My particular model of video card is the eVGA GeForce 7800GT 256MB OC Edition. This line of video cards was factory overclocked too far, and as a result they require underclocking closer to stock settings in order to get running properly. I could flash the BIOS on my card to permanently fix it, but I don't want to risk bricking it since it was $300 when I bought it, and that would be $300 needlessly out the window. The other problem is that I play games older than IL-2 (Battlezone series comes to mind), and when I have newer drivers, they stutter like crazy. The older drivers (91.86, I believe I am using) run everything I play without issue, so I see no further reason to update.

I'll play with the VideoID and filtering a bit, see where that gets me. I can also set my monitor to 60Hz for IL-2, and see if that makes a difference.

Yes, that is good, bro.

I would recommend running any game in Compatability Mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2, if it is any older game such as IL-2. Set this for both the Program .exe file and the Setup.exe file.
