Palau repaintV1 - airfields arriving
#76

Hey Redko- from my understanding (and others if you know correct me if I am wrong,) if you do textures, textures is all you would do Smile

Hope it happens- from what we've seen, you've got such a nice touch it's hard to imagine some studio not seeing it also, and acting on it to your mutual benefit.

But even if it doesn't, we are the beneficiaries of your great efforts!

Thank you again

Fly! Wrote:Cheers redko! possibly lighter blue/more saturation?

You read in my mind dude  . it's the kind of atmosphere i want to give to this map. but be careful...take in consideration that we can't trust thoose WW2 pics, the slides of that period have a special deal with colours. and most of recent pics for pacific atolls we can find on internet are saturated for commercial purpose.

BTW are those Life pictures free of rights or you have to pay it? i want more!!!!! Big Grin .

If your have more color pics from Life related for this map please post!

Great Big Grin

I would just loose red channel in the water color, and leave green and blue without that ink red tinting.

Wish I'd have seen that Dauntless pic when I did my Midway. The cutoff between the shallows and deeper water in the middle of the atoll is far more pronounced than I have it. Sad . Great pic tho.
And keep up the amazing work redko Big Grin .

Hi redko,

First of all, let me say that your work is fantastic, and I am very excited about the Palau map. My suggestions are purely constructive, because I want this map so bad! I took a stab at map making quite a while ago and ultimately gave up, so I know how tedious it can get.

I've spent some time in Palau recently for work (tough job!). I can say that the colors in those modern pictures are NOT saturated - it's a totally foreign world to those of us from the more drab climates farther north. Go with what looks right! Don't be afraid of the saturation!

A couple of suggestions:
- Lose the rivers. Palau's rivers are very narrow, as are rivers on most Pacific Islands, with the occasional exception of the segment nearest the coastline (estuary). My suggestion is just to paint over it in your map_c as land. If possible, maybe you can experiment with the narrow streams plate shown in one of the threads below? (sorry, can't remember who's right now). Even then, most island rivers cannot be seen from the air, because the forest canopy covers it. My approach was going to be to completely forest the valley bottoms to simulate this, unless you have images showing farmland in a particular valley.

- There seems to be too much "surf", but I am not sure if I am interpreting what I see in your images correctly. All surf will be on the outermost reef. Inside the reef system, the water is relatively calm and there is no surf.

Regardless, it's looking beautiful!

I might humbly ask that you consider a re-paint of the Marianas Islands as a future project - Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. That's what I was working on when I gave up. I have collected quite a bit of reference images for these islands if you are interested - wartime maps, aerial photos, etc. Plus, I live on Saipan, so I have a very good feel for the colors and landscape patterns.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Ok Dleg roger that.

- for saturation is not that i'm afraid by that, i know lands of this part of the world have their own colours. my fear is more about how Il2 deals with it. it's a game, an old one, and the engine
doesn't deal good with colours in general, and saturated colours in particular. it's a common problem in games, the way they deal with colour is far away from a photographer approach.

only recent games are starting to take in consideration this problem, helped with the evolution of new programming libraries, like DirectX 10 and 11. Crysis is a goo exemple. Arma is another
one. Today programmers are looking for photorealism and that's what i want too since my first repain, Okinawa. So if the map requires staturated colours...it will be. The question is how far i
must go to avoid plastic rendering.

We will see. the actual version i'm working with is saturated. you will be able to see it soon for release

- ok for rivers. i just checked that point in google earth and they are hard to find. i will repaint it if i have time. i don't wan't to go too far in moding this map, the idea is a quick repaint. When in
started my repaints, the idea was to "save and update" the most drinkable maps of this sim....there is enough talented guys here ot create new one. I will repaint the most maps as i can, but
not all deserves this (italy_Df for exemple)

- ok for surf. coral part is at the beginning. i get some help from Avala, thanks to him

- and YES....................there will be a repaint of Marianas - Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan - . teenager i was "fan" of PTO, i have in mind so many docs i saw when i was younger (i'm 30
) about the war in this part of the world, and the maps are so bad compared to what we have for ETO and MTO that it was obvious that a repainy was needed.

Cool! Thanks.

The first time I flew over Saipan in IL2, I almost cried. It was so disappointing. Getting rid of the rivers on the Pacific islands is almost essential, IMO. They're almost unrecognizable with such huge rivers. If all you have interest and time to do is re-texture and eliminate rivers, it would represent an ENORMOUS improvement to all the stock Pacific maps.

I may be a little behind on the map making process now, but wouldn't painting over the rivers in map c as "white" (land) be all you need to do to get rid of rivers?

Also, I wonder if some of your mountain shadows techniques could be used to partially overcome IL2's limitations on simulating the small "Rock Islands" in the central part of the Palau Lagoon. As you can see from the photo posted above, none of those islands have "beach" per se, they are just forest-covered rock that end abruptly at the water. I know IL2 doesn't allow for that, but maybe there's a texturing solution? (Just throwing out a thought - no expectation at all that you will address it. What you've done is already very welcome)

The Rock Islands are a very unique and beautiful feature of the archipelago. Not something that can be duplicated in Il-2, but so fun to look at!
