Graphics Card Driver Poll and Survey of ATI and NVIDIA

GeneralPsycho Wrote:Right now I am facing a decision whether to purchase a 5850 or GTX470. Does anyone know if GTX470's Fermi Architecture works with this game?

GTX470 performs better on the whole compared to the HD5850, so if it's within your budget and there's nothing else you'd rather have that extra cash for, then go with the GTX470.

I have a GeForce 7800GT 256MB, using 91.28 drivers. Never had a problem except for the black circles on the water, but it comes and goes and is not at all that big of a deal.

Axial, YOU FUNNY! You are still predictable. Once again I knew that you would appear in this topic and generally what your response would be.

Actually, I have stated many times at AAA and other websites: ATI generally has the best graphics cards at this time but IL-2 users sometimes have issues with it. The NVIDIA cards have some driver issues with IL-2, too.

ATI and NVIDIA will never be equal because of the tremendous technical complexity of the graphics cards, the different types of the same brand, the unique graphics requirements of IL-2, the knowledge limitations of the users, the switch to DirectX 11 with Storm of War, and the ever changing pace of ATI and NVIDIA technical development. ATI and NVIDIA have exchanged leads on which is the best several times and will likely do so in the future.

I read many scary stories back when I had bought the card and was awaiting delivery, but not one of the issues materialized. A fluke? I don't think so. I think the majority of difficulties many encountered had more to do with processors, motherboards, other hardware compatibility, overclocking, etc, and not the ATI card. I could not be happier. Never had any drivers issues either, except for that black block text thing, but it cleared itself. NVIDIA is fine, I guess, but why mess with success?

You are not having problems because you are using Excellent settings which use Shader 2.0 version. Try to put your settings to Perfect and see what happens...

I have an OpenGL dll file from 9.3 that can be dropped in IL2 folder if you have newer than 9.4 drivers. Just ask, and I will upload it for you. This will allow you to use Perfect settings on ATi without blocks font.

Ciao all. I read on a italian reliable gaming magazine (thanks TGM), which forceware 196.75 drivers have a bug with certain blizzard games could fry the video card (no fan). I trust the news (I already burned an 8800 Ultra in the past ..) so if someone uses these drivers NVIDIA recommends that you go back to 196.21 or newest.I current have 195.72 works well (apparently) and gtx 295. Long life AAA (and Hsfx and U.P.....) Big Grin

WARNING: READ THE ABOVE TEXT about a bad driver!

I confirm this because I read it in other sources, including a topic posted at NVIDIA.

I have dealt with both types of cards through out the years, but my GTS 250 is the easiest by far to deal with. Il2 is beeeyoootiful now, thanks to modders btw! Big Grin

Duh. Tongue I only state facts though. According to benchmark and in-game results published across the web:
HD5970 > GTX480 > HD5870 > GTX470 > HD5850 (and after that it's pure ATi since nVidia has no more current generation cards after the two listed here).

Last generation, it was:
GTX295 > HD4870X2 > GTX285 > HD4850X2 > GTX260 Core 216 => HD4870 1GB > GTX260 Core 192 > HD4850.

I don't have a brand preference (all of my cards are nVidia by coincidence, save an old Rage Pro All-In-Wonder and a Radeon 7000 64MB), I just don't like seeing someone basing all opinions of current generation cards off of what has happened with previous generation cards when those previous generations have close to zero technical and software relation to the current cards. i.e. performance of a Radeon X1k series has just about no relation to how the HD4000 series will perform. Drivers have also changed radically (yay AMD acquisition), and so has the OpenGL spec since OpenGL 2.0.

I completely agree that the two companies will continue to exchange blows. Right now, performance is so close that it boils down to how much money can you spend and whose special features you are more interested in. Want Eyefinity and low power consumption, go with ATi. Want PhysX and 3D Vision, go with nVidia. Even in classically nVidia-centric games (there are no ATi-centric games that I know of other than Halo PC, but it's not a performance thing with that one), the performance margin is so small that it can be ignored, and considering the power provided by the cards it is often a moot point anyways.

As for Storm of War...well, we'll see. I suspect it will fall into the performance order I listed above almost to a fault.

Choosing a graphics card is no longer just about seeing which one is the fastest. You can compare the clock speeds, memory speeds and types as well as polygon and pixel counts. The best Nvidia card is neither to far ahead or behind the top ATI offering. Preference plays a big part in deciding which card you require.

Long ago (2001 or 02 I htink) I used an ATI card but I swiched to nVidia after that and I have been satisfied with the cards (series 4800[?] 5800[?] 6800, 7800, 8800 and now 9800 GTX+. At times there has been driver issues but reading forums and downgrading until better drivers were beeing released has kept me flying.

In response to the [?]s from above:

nVidia line goes from GeForce MX4 to GeForce FX5000 series. Then it continues on with GeForce 6000, 7000, 8000, and 9000 series. After that, it switches to a reverse nomenclature in the GTX260 and GTX280, and now the GTX480 and GTX470. The GTS200 and GT200 series cards are actually rebadged GeForce 9000 series cards in an effort to make them appear newer and therefore sell more.

Historically, nVidia cards have more brute power than ATi cards. From my experience with both, though, ATi cards have superior image quality. Both brands have had their ups and downs on drivers. Also, if you intend to get a multi GPU setup, it's good to know that SLI currently scales better than Crossfire.
