If the settings are the same for OpenGL and DirectX, then DirectX should allow faster FPS because DirectX has fewer extension features to process.

Why you would get better FPS with OpenGL on a system with only 1.6 Ghz CPU is beyond my comprehension. :wink:

Hi,

I have a problem with sudden shuttering. I'll try to explain. I run IL-2 on my laptop, which is Dell XPS m1530. It has 2,2 GHz dual core CPU, 4 GB of RAM and GeForce 8600m GT with 256 MB VRAM, running Windows 7 64 bit. I think that it should be good enough to run IL-2 good. Well I can run the game on highest settings (without water and some things in conf.ini) with perfect FPS. I run it in OpenGL mode. The problem is that after like 5 to 10 minutes, the game starts to shutter really bad. It lasts for about 5 to 10 seconds and it is like 3 FPS which is unplayable. I am not sure what causes the problem, but I tried some things including lowering my game settings and tweaking the conf.ini with no success. I guess that a lack of VRAM causes this. I have a fancy widget Smile on on my desktop showing how much of VRAM is used and when I'm not playing there is about 50 MB used, but when I run the game the VRAM is completely full. Next thing I'm not sure about is so called Turbo Cache. It should allow graphic card to cut a part of system RAM and use it, when it runs out of VRAM. I'm not sure if it really works, as I couldn't find a way, how could I observe it. However in Windows it says that Total Available Graphic Memory is 2000 MB so I suppose it should work. Then if it really works, I'm not sure if it is good or bad for IL-2.

The most common way that IL-2 will stutter is when RAM becomes full.

For my 2007 laptop with 2.0 Gz CPU, 3 GB RAM, and 7000 series NVIDIA, it won't take too much to fill the RAM. Performance is okay when RAM is not full.

Some mods in IL-2 simply fill lots of RAM, such as large maps. When RAM is full, we know that page file size is used, but IL-2 doesn't like page file data so we get stuttering when that happens.

Tommy, I designed this topic to address computer issues first, such as doing everything one can do to keep data from competing with IL-2 in RAM. The first couple pages of this thread go into that.

Currently I use to play IL2 at 860x640x16 and medium settings with a reasonable smoothness, so I am following your guide in order to improve my computer's performance.
But some doubts have already arised:

*Page File Size
How should I customize? The window shows "Inicial Size"(1536Mb) and "Maximum Size" (3072Mb). I assume the inicial size should be set at, let's say, 3000Mb. Is that right?

*Increase RAM Utilization for IL2
Should I use the Ultrapack add-on? (obs.: I have HSFX...).

*Dedicated RAM
You said it is controlled by the Graphics Card but I did not find anything that I can set at the corresponding window (I have the NVidia GeForce FX 5200).

Well, there are many other questions but off course I don't want to bore you too much... Big Grin

Help will be fully appreciated!

Thanks for your reply, really appreciate that you are trying to help.

Well, I don't think the lack of RAM might be a problem, because I have 4 GB of it and when I'm running IL-2, there is still about 1,5 GB free (even after long time playing). I am not using any mods at the moment, as I think there is no mod pack jet for the newest version of the game.
Today, I tried to to increase my total available VRAM, so I disabled all eye candy that Win 7 has (aero and so on). It gave me about 30 MB. Now the game runs smooth without those shutters and I have about 15 MB free of my 256 MB VRAM. So I suppose that lack of VRAM causes the problems.
I hope that this will finally fix those frickin' shutters Smile

PS: I just hope that IL-2 doesn't need any more VRAM, because there is no way I could give it more...

Yes, everything that uses VRAM should be disabled, including screen-savers (at least while you fly in IL-2).

I tried to set up IL 2 on Maximium settings with the confi.ini, it worked quite good, no stutters or anything at all, but i have a strange problem now.
The colors seem like not the full 32-Bits are used, the colors dont seem smooth, especially at night or dawn.
A screenshot, notice the lines on the lower part.

It looks as though one of the filters or compressions is activated, but I won't know for certain until I get a look at your confi.ini file and all your computer graphics control panel settings.

Please post your IL-2 Setup configuration as well (il2setup.ini and your IL-2 Setup window configuration).

If you are confused or can't find everything, just give me what you can and I might be able to help you.

If you can post these things, then I can go from speculation to diagnosis.
