i think it's also meant to simulate the pilot passing out from the heavy g-forces, which happened a lot until the advent of the G-suit which under G would apply pressure to the lower parts of the body such as the legs to keep blood from being forced out of the head and help the pilot retain vision and consciousness when pulling heavy maneuvers. just my opinion .
