I'm using sound mod 9.3, the aircraft concerned are the A-20, SBD, Wildcat, Hellcat, Corsair. I can't find anything on the forums but does anyone know this bug and have a cure for it? It really is spooky barreling along at full throttle with just wind noise.
Caldrail:
I had the exact same problem--I was using sound mod ver. 093 and found that I had no engine sound on the F4F-3 and other allied planes. After weeks of searching for a solution, I saw a post explaining that it is very important for you to have the correct version of the AC Installer installed as well:

I did not have the AC Installer at all, so I downloaded it. When you install, a dialogue box pops up and asks you to select the version of the sound mod you have. Naturally, I selected 093 and started the game, fully expecting to hear the F4F-3's engine for the first time in weeks. But no joy--still nothing but the wind sounds were audible. So I re-installed the AC Installer, but this time I selected the SFX mod when asked to indicate the correct sound mod version (I had installed the SFX mod as well as 093). With that, I could hear the F4F-3's engine sound perfectly! Hopefully this works for you too. Good luck.

Exactly. When you install a new plane make sure you select the right sound mod for it. I had the exact problem as above and i traced it down to my fault. i didn't pay atention when i installed the new Beaufighter MkX. I selected the instal for version 9.03 of the sound mod and i had 9.0. This install imediatly killed the sound for all the planes that used the same engine sound with the new beaufighter: Wildcat, a20, p-47 i think.
A simple reinstall of the aircraft installer and the Beaufighter mod fixed it for me.
This is the screen where you have to pay attention:
