I've come across an interesting phenomenon. Following the advice given above I've reinstalled AC Installer in all its versions and what happens is that eah gives me a different subset of engine sounds within the cockpit. Sadly it doesn't seem to cover the entire range so 'pre-installing' the software prior to play doesn't allow you to choose which cockpit sounds you have before play
