I've seen this before on a notebook PC but I can't remember the make/model. It's probably a driver issue but maybe not sound. Depending on the mainboard chipset it might be a conflict with an IDE driver - try searching Google for "your chipset + your sound hardware audio problem" to check for a fix/patch/update.
